Communication  Device  Setup  for  Wireless  Usage   Introduction   The  Communication  Device  can  be  setup  for  wireless  usage,  enabling  you  to  move  your  meter  to  any  location  that  is  within  the   range  of  a  wireless  access  point  on  your  network.    You  should  have  a  working  knowledge  of  your  wireless  network  in  order  to   complete  the  setup  successfully.    Follow  the  steps  below.    If  at  any  point  you  are  not  certain  how  to  proceed,  consult  with  your  IT   specialist.      

Preparation  

Before  you  can  begin  setting  up  the  Communication  Device  for  wireless  operation,  you  must  consider  the  following:   • Be  sure  one  of  your  wireless  access  points  is  close  enough  to  the  location     of  your  meter  to  have  good  signal  strength.     Wireless USB plug-In   • The  name  (i.e.,  SSID)  and  password  (i.e.,  key)  for  the  wireless  network     you  want  to  use.    The  SSID  may  be  on  the  bottom  of  your  wireless  router.       • The  Wireless  USB  Plug-­‐in  must  be  installed  in  one  of  the  USB  ports  in     the  Communication  Device.     • Knowledge  of  any  special  settings  necessary  to  install  a  device  on  your     wireless  network,  such  as  static  IPs,  proxies  servers  or  non-­‐standard     wireless  network  settings.     • Determine  if  your  network  supports  Wi-­‐Fi  Protected  Setup.    This  is  the     easiest  way  to  setup  the  Communication  Device.    If  so,  follow  the  WPS   instructions  at  end  of  this  document.    [Append  WPS  at  end]                     Communication  Device  Setup  for  Wireless  Usage

Communication  Device  Setup  for  Wireless  Usage   Communication  Device  Setup  Procedure   The  following  process  shows  how  to  download  and  open  the  network  setup  utility  used  to  program  the  Communications  Device  with   the  settings  and  parameters  it  will  need  to  operate  properly  on  your  wireless  network.       Step   1. To  get  the  Communication  Device  ready  for  

wireless  operation,  you  will  first  have  to   communicate  with  it  over  a  wired  network   connection.

  a. Connect  the  Communication  Device  to  an   active  port  on  your  network  via  a  router,  hub   or  network  wall  jack.         b. Next,  connect  the  AC  Adapter  to  the   Communication  Device  and  a  power  outlet.     c. Wait  45  seconds  for  the  right  LED  to  blink   orange,  indicating  that  the  Communication   Device  detects  an  active  connection  to  the   Internet.

Communication  Device  Setup  for  Wireless  Usage   Step   2. Download  the  Network  Setup  Software  at   www.pb.com/support/netsetup.     Click  on  the  button  for  your  type  of  computer  to   download  the  appropriate  software

3. Unzip the download.     Open the file Autorun.exe [Check file name] Click the Set up for Wireless Connection button.

  5. Select your Communication Device from the list. It will say “PB Comm Device” in the Model Name column. The MAC Address will match the label underneath your Communication Device.    

 

 

Note: Searching your network for the Communication Device may take about a minute.

Choose the wireless network you want your meter to use to connect to the Internet.     If  required,  enter  and  re-­‐enter  the  password  (key)   for  the  selected  wireless  network,  then  click  Next.               NOTE:  If  your  wireless  network  does  not  broadcast   its  name,  the  name  will  not  appear  on  this  list.  You   can  complete  this  on  the  following  screen.    

7. The utility displays a set of tabs which you can use to enter and special settings your network may require, such as a static IP, proxy server or unique settings for your wireless network.

If your network does not require any special settings you can skip these screens by clicking Next.

Confirm that these are the settings you want to send to the Communication Device by clicking Submit.  

9. Restart the Communication Device and set it up for wireless usage with your meter:

 

   

a. Disconnect the Network Cable and AC adapter from the Communication Device. b. Connect the meter to the Communication Device with the USB cable.

(continued) c. Connect power to both the Communication Device and meter.

d. After 60 seconds, check that the right LED on the Communication Device is blinking green

10. Confirm that the wireless connection is working. Installing a NEW METERS On a new meter, 10 seconds after the meter completes its startup routine it will display the message “Meter connected to internet”.

When this message appears you can now continue with meter installation.

Adding wireless to an INSTALLED METER Wait for the meter to complete its startup routine, then check your account balances to test that the meter is communicating with the Internet by doing the following:

a. Press the Funds button on the meter. b. Use a Review button () to display the option “Check amt available to download?” Press Enter/yes. c. When your balances appear on the meter, you have confirmed that your wireless connection is working.
