Community College Career and Technical Education (CTE) Stackable Certificates Initiative Purpose The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education (OCTAE) is dedicating technical assistance (TA) efforts and creation of resources to support Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The Community College Career and Technical Education (CTE) Stackable Certificates Initiative builds the capacity of consortia of community colleges or state community and technical college systems to improve CTE credential attainment rates among youth and adults enrolled in degree programs at community colleges. This initiative supports the development of high quality postsecondary CTE programs that embed industry-recognized credentials within their technical degree programs. Breaking apart traditional degree programs into a series of progressive, stackable certificates that build on each other has emerged as a promising practice to help students progress along the education continuum and to help low-skilled youth and adults obtain a postsecondary credential with labor market value. Project Outcomes and Benefits During the two-year project, resources will be created to advance the work of the field in embedding stackable certificates within CTE associate degree programs of study. A hallmark of this initiative includes customized technical assistance for consortia of community colleges and state systems to advance their efforts in designing stackable certificates through priorities and actions based on local needs and targeted issues. Resources to be developed and activities to be conducted include:
Reports documenting how successful programs are developed, implemented, and sustained; Technical Assistance for community college consortia across the nation; An institute for community college consortia leaders in Summer 2016; A toolkit, accompanying tutorials, and resource web page; and Webinars highlighting project findings, outcomes, and products.
