Significance of Rosh Chodesh Elul: This is the time of year that we begin focusing on Teshuva and evaluating our actions. Historically we are taught that Rosh Chodesh Elul is when Moshe went up Mount Sinai to ask G-d to forgive the Jewish people for the sin of the Golden Calf. Ever since that moment in history this time period has been infused with an amazing opportunity to seek G-d’s forgiveness as we prepare for the new year.

Significance of Rosh Hashana:

Rosh Hashana celebrates the anniversary of when man was created. This is seen as the culmination of the six days of creation and human beings were put in this world to realize the powerful potential of creation. This is also the New Year of the Jewish calendar and a time when we evaluate how well we are living up to this lofty goal. On this day we ask “what have I done to achieve my potential”?

Significance of Yom Kippur: Yom Kippur is the historical date of when G-d gave the Jewish people the second set of the 10 Commandments and formally offered his forgiveness for their sin with the golden calf. This is a day where G-d is looking for every opportunity to forgive us for the mistakes we made in the past. He only asks for a sincere desire to improve. Above all G-d is seeking out a relationship with us.
