GIVING THE WORLD'S RESOURCES NEW LIFE
The world is changing. Once there was ‘waste’. Now there are potentially valuable resources society must challenge itself to reuse, recycle and recover. Viridor, with its innovative services, is an integral part of this transformation. The world, the industry and our clients now see Viridor in a different light. And we’re up for the challenge.
Society’s resource challenge By transforming domestic and commercial waste and recyclables into high-quality raw materials or renewable energy, we’re making a substantial contribution to improving both our customers’ and the UK’s resource efficiency. 01
Viridor has invested in some of the UK’s most advanced recycling and energy recovery facilities. This social infrastructure enables a pioneering resource management service which knows where every last bit of material ends up. It’s smart technology, safely operated by smart people. And with Viridor, it’s not talk, it’s action.
Most advanced We’ve invested over £1 billion in a network of Energy Recovery Facilities (ERFs). These work alongside our advanced Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) and collection and contract services. Trident Park ERF Cardiff 02

Transforming industrial, commercial and domestic ‘waste’ into high-quality raw materials and vital energy means investment in infrastructure, equipment and people. Quality is at the heart of everything we do. That’s what creates value for Viridor and for our clients.
Quality assurance Each year Viridor transforms over two million tonnes of materials into high quality recyclates. Viridor Resource Management (VRM) has the expertise and long-term relationships to allow us to trade these materials ourselves to markets in the UK, Europe and around the world. Quality Recycled Materials
Vital Renewable Energy
We continue to increase our recycling capacity through investment in new facilities and acquisitions. We work with our local authority and commercial customers to find a recycling solution that suits them. This includes supporting collections that sort materials at source, providing commingled, dry mixed recycling services, and operating user-friendly household waste recycling sites. In some cases we also manage recycling operations on the customers’ own sites.
After reducing, reusing and recycling as much as possible, recovering energy from our waste is the next big thing. We’re investing over £1billion in Energy Recovery Facilities in the coming years, which use state-of-theart technology to generate heat and power. We also operate anaerobic digestion plants to generate electricity, which break down organic waste to release heat and energy. Gas produced and harnessed to generate power from existing landfill sites also provides a major contribution. Energy recovery from waste (both biodegradable and non-biodegradable) accounts for c.8% of total UK renewable energy. Viridor believes that by 2020 UK energy recovery from waste could produce 13% of the total forecasted UK renewable energy. It will be a vital contribution given predicted capacity shortage in the energy sector.

Our people are our greatest resource We employ over three thousand highly trained people. We provide apprenticeships, graduate recruitment and management training schemes to nurture skills. Our investment in their future equips them to overcome tomorrow’s challenges. Above all, we actively promote a culture of health and safety, working towards our objective of zero accidents.
A positive difference You can’t learn about waste management too soon. This is why we invite schools to visit our environmental education centres at our facilities across the UK, helping to promote better understanding and best practice in waste prevention, recycling, recovery, resource management and sustainability. We have open days at many of our sites where the general public can see for themselves what a positive difference we are all making. It’s our hope that they will encourage their friends and families to recycle more and waste less.
02
Behind the scenes we continue to work with trade associations and all levels of government on the UK’s resource, energy and waste management strategies.
Working in partnership We engage with and support the communities and environment in which we serve, through an active programme of community funding and charitable giving. Every day we rely on the cooperation of people living and working near our sites and operations, with Viridor colleagues joining in and helping at events, projects, in education and with sports teams. We have planted trees, helped toddler groups, attended summer fetes, run, cycled and canoed to raise sponsorship. We also provide millions in funding for Viridor Credits, an independent environmental charity, which delivers funding for community, amenity and conservation projects in areas close to our operating landfills.

Land stewardship is important to us, and to local communities, plants and wildlife. Since 2008 Viridor has sought to restore and manage our closed landfill sites in accordance with the Wildlife Trusts’ Biodiversity Benchmark Scheme (BBS). By the end of 2013 we were pleased that a total of six sites had achieved/retained the certification, with plans for more in the future. Our core services in recycling and renewable power generation can help deliver significant environmental and carbon reduction benefits. We ensure our growing fleet of trucks is economical, efficient and driven by people who understand the importance of cutting emissions and saving fuel.
