Summer is here! School is ending and the days are getting much warmer. It’s the start of summer vacations, camps, and outings at the pool and beach. That means kids are out of school, so take extra precaution while driving on the highways and in your own neighborhood. Soon the temperature will be in the 90’s on a regular basis. I had to replace my air conditioner last year – luckily in April - before the really hot weather started. It is a good time to look around your home and see what may be in need of some summer attention. Have your AC inspected. If it needs to be serviced, the sooner the better than in the hottest part of the year. Your pool will probably be getting a lot more use so make sure it’s in top condition. Unfortunately, hurricane season is beginning as well, so it’s time to look around your home and yard and make the necessary preparations. Remove dead or diseased limbs, or limbs that hang too close to your home. Also make sure sheds are secured. Hurricane check lists will be available. By reviewing the list, you can make sure you have enough bottled water, non-perishable foods, batteries, etc. Perhaps you’ve been putting off upgrading your windows or installing hurricane shutters. Now is the time to schedule the work before a storm is looming. Many years ago I had accordion shutters installed which takes me only minutes to set up. We can’t forget that we celebrate Father’s Day in June. It’s a wonderful time to reflect on the wonderful men who make or have made such a difference in our lives. Whatever June brings for you and your family, I hope you have a safe and fun-filled month!

Compassionate Heart Within Abacoa is the community of Martinique, home of Kelly Carroll and her two sons Colin, age 11, and Shane, age 10. With her career and two young boys to look after, Kelly fosters a compassionate, active atmosphere for her family. A Florida native, Kelly’s family has roots in West Palm Beach that go back to her parents, who also grew up in the area. She studied at the University of Central Florida, receiving her Bachelor’s in Science in Communicative Disorders. After graduation, she continued her education at Lynn University and earned her Master’s in Science in Healthcare Administration. “I originally wanted to be a speech pathologist,” said Kelly, “but I went towards health care administration and have been doing senior living for about 15 years.” Kelly is the Director of Operations of Senior Helpers of the Treasure Coast. Senior Helpers was founded by Tony Bonacuse and Peter Ross after caring for their own senior family members. Their dissatisfaction with their experiences gave them the encouragement to create their own company. The goals they had in mind were that they would provide a level of professionalism they were looking for and address some of the gaps they felt other companies weren’t providing. The company has grown and can now be found internationally. Outside of work, Kelly focuses much of her time on her sons. They moved into Martinique about a year and a half ago in order to provide a better experience for Colin and Shane. “We moved here for the schools,” said Kelly. Colin in 8

currently in 5th grade and Shane is in 4th grade at Beacon Cove Intermediate School. “Colin will be entering middle school next year, and it doesn’t start until 9, so he’ll have to go to school on his own. He can ride his skateboard to school from here, and come home by himself, and I feel okay with that.” With two active boys, it wasn’t a surprise that Kelly sees them preferring movement to picking a favorite school subject. “They’ll both tell you P.E.,” laughed Kelly. “Shane is good at art. He’s really quite imaginative. Colin is much more analytical. I would say math is his strong suit. Pick a subject,” Kelly told the boys. “Math,” said Colin. “I like science, too,” said Shane. Having their preference, both Colin Cover story sponsored by Burman Dental
and Shane admitted P.E. was still their first choice. The boys are involved in soccer, playing for competitive traveling teams. Over the summer, they’ll be playing in the Disney Cup in Orlando. The Disney
Cup is held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and in the past 16 years has seen teams from over 20 countries compete. Colin and Shane are also learning to surf. “That’s become a summer time event.

[email protected] They both got a starter surfboard,” said Kelly, “so we started that last summer.” Away from home, the family loves going on cruises. “We’ve done the Disney cruise a few times,” said Kelly. “That’s always a favorite of ours. We go to the Keys. Even though we live in a tropical environment, that seems to be where we always travel to.” “Besides the beach, we go to the pool here at Martinique frequently. It’s very family oriented here. The best thing about Martinique is Halloween; you just have to walk out your front door. Everybody flocks here. During Christmas time, everyone decorates their balconies, and it’s really neat.” Outside of the neighborhood, Kelly is particularly fond of the Seafood Festival, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and the Fourth of July. The boys prefer going out to eat to watch games. “The boys are die-hard Duffy’s fans,” laughed Kelly. Outside of professional soccer, their favorite teams to watch are the Steelers and Sea Hawks. “We like to go to a Cuban restaurant called CopaCabana. It’s very family oriented. Colin and I are learning Salsa,” said Kelly. “I love that he likes it. We’ll go there and watch the other people, and he’ll get out there with me.” With their busy schedule, Kelly also reminds her boys to stay humble and contribute back into the community. The family attends St. Peter’s Catholic Church and has a fondness for Peggy Adams. “We love to donate to Peggy Adams,” said Kelly, “we’re huge animal activists. We’ve got two cats from there. And I’ve got Gus.” The family’s dog, Gus, is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Their cats that they got from Peggy Adams are a boy and a girl, named Henry and Lilly. Kelly has nurtured an active, loving, and adventurous environment for her family. In return, Colin and Shane keep her busy with their interests and love of sports. Moving into Abacoa has been the perfect place for this family to thrive. “I feel very safe here,” said Kelly. “I love the neighborhood.”
