Everybody, write your idea on a piece of paper.

Culminating Task

Extension Activity

Both are valid!

Assignment (culminating task) Using the road map, they will prove whether they understood the book. Students will respond in writing: Were the crayons successful in getting what they wanted? Provide evidence to defend your answer.

What IS a text set? 

The text set for this book is: The Day the Crayons Quit (Drew Daywalt) Dear Mrs. LaRue (Mark Teague) Click, Clack, Moo ( The purpose is for students to understand that communication through letter-writing can accomplish a goal.

The state guidebooks already have the close reading lessons written out and have the text sets put together! “The anchor text is the focus text for the unit-a quality text that students read and understand and then express their understanding as they work with the grade level standards. The supporting texts help students make meaning of the themes, concepts, or topics highlighted in the anchor text.”

Math? Social Studies?

Classroom climate?

Students listen to stories about characters in Africa to learn lessons about proper behavior… “…due to the repetition and rhyme of some of the texts, students work to engage with the reading of the texts while learning about the animals of the African savannah and how they interact. This unit connects with social studies and science.”

Anchor Text: Mama Panya’s Pancakes by Mary and Richard Chamberlain  Companion Texts: The Selfish Crocodile-Faustin Charles The Greedy Python- Richard Buckley Honey…Honey…Lion- Jan Brett 

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in Peoples’ Ears: A West African Tale- Verna Aardema Here is the African Savannah-Madeleine Dunphy
