Configuration Guide for Iomega and Veeam Backup & Replication

Products Veeam Backup & Replication v5 Iomega® StorCenter™ Network Storage arrays

Summary: This resource will highlight the steps required to achieve the optimum configuration with Veeam Backup & Replication v5 and Iomega® StorCenter™ Network Storage arrays.

Configuration steps: There are only a few options for configuring Veeam Backup & Replication with Iomega® StorCenter™ Network Storage arrays, and these are limited to job configuration and organization. Veeam recommends provisioning an iSCSI target (LUN) explicitly for the purpose of hosting Veeam backup data. This LUN would be provisioned and formatted directly by the Windows Server running Veeam Backup & Replication. This would require the iSCSI initiator to be configured to connect to the StorCenter as a backup target. This configuration is represented in the following graphic:

The following characteristics need to be employed with this configuration: 1. When configuring backup jobs, leverage the following options: • Use traditional incremental mode • Enable synthetic full backups • Enable active full backups, weekly or monthly • Enable compression • Storage optimization: * Optimize for local target for iSCSI 2. Schedule jobs so that the number of concurrent jobs is limited to 6 or fewer. This number may vary depending on a number of other factors. 3. If iSCSI is used, ensure that the iSCSI initiator of the Veeam server and the iSCSI target of the StorCenter are on the same IP network (no routing for the iSCSI storage protocol).

Using the StorCenter require very little in the form of configurations outside of the defaults for Veeam Backup & Replication. If a StorCenter controller is to exclusively function as a Veeam Backup & Replication target, consider isolating both the StorCenter controller and Veeam Backup & Replication to be on a designated VLAN (or separate physical media).
