Events Calendar Plaza 205 Mobile Feb. 25, noon, Blue Room, Government Plaza. Program on “Succession Planning and Career Development.” IAAP Alabama Division June 20-22, Alabama Division Annual Meeting (ADAM), Birmingham. IAAP International March 13-15, Technology Education Conference, Atlanta. July 26-30, EFAM, Milwaukee Convention Center, Milwaukee, WI.

Love is in the air… love for IAAP that is! I love IAAP for its fellowship, training, and learning. I learn something new at every meeting with each guest speaker. The monthly membership meeting is the backbone of our chapter. This is where we learn and network. The chapter board is constantly on the lookout for topics of interest to our members, and dynamic speakers to talk about those topics. It is a learning experience we want for our members. Then there is the networking. Where else can you meet up with fellow admins

once a month and talk about the latest technology or what is going on in the workplace that could be of interest? We network not only with our own chapter members, but with other members as well. We forge new friendships with Alabama and national chapter members, and we learn from them.

Then there’s the training. IAAP offers certification, a Technology Education Conference, webinars, and more, all at a reasonable cost. Registration for the TEC has already exceeded last year’s and seats are filled, proving that admins are thirsty for the latest training in technology in order to remain on top of their game. IAAP is also about fun. We have fun at the Bosses Day and Administrative Professionals Day luncheons, our chapter birthday party, the Alabama Division Annual Meeting, and more. What is there not to love about IAAP?

International Association of Administrative Professionals is a non-profit organization for office professionals with nearly 600 chapters worldwide, enhancing the success of career-minded administrative professionals by providing opportunities for growth through education, community building, and leadership development.

Program Highlights The Feb. 6 membership meeting replaced the Jan. 28 meeting, which was cancelled due to inclement weather. Philip Stiell, a business consultant who recently retired from B.P. as community relations director, spoke on “Being Indispensable in a Disposable Workplace.” Mr. Stiell is presently in the real estate industry as owner of American Dream Realty. He explained that in the workplace, there are four types of people: 1. Those who know and know they know— be like them. They learn to work the organization. They are knowledgable, confident, an expert in their field and learn to work well within the organization. 2. Those who know and don’t know they

they don’t know—stay away from them. These are typically the office gossips and often make themselves look good so others look bad. Sometimes guilt by association may come into play so make sure you associate with the right people.

Philip Stiell, co-owner of American Dream Realty, speaks to the Plaza 205 Mobile Chapter about how to stay indispensable in a disposable work place. He recommends reading Gung Ho! written by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles which tells about about a unique way to manage people and companies.

know—be willing to learn from them. They are always in a learning mode and trying new technology. 3. Those who don’t know and know they don’t know—respect

them. But, they do not stop there. They will find out the answer and get back to you. They overcome their limitations. 4. Those who don’t know and don’t know

As Mr. Stiell reflects back on his successful business career, he said, “organization will get along without me and I will get along without organization.” He recommended the following books:  The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey  Who Moved My Cheese? by Ken Blanchard  Gung Ho by Ken Blanchard  Why Should the Boss Listen to You? by James Lukuzewski

Kenny’s Komputer Korner Calculate more At first glance the Windows 7 calculator looks just like Vista's version, but explore the Mode menu and you'll see powerful new Statistics and Programmer views. And if you're clueless about bitwise manipulation, then try the Options menu instead. This offers many different unit conversions, date calculations, and spreadsheet-type templates to help you calculate vehicle mileage, mortgage rates and more. Don't take any Windows 7 applet at face value. There are some very powerful new features hidden in the background. Be sure to explore every option in all Windows applets to ensure you don't miss anything important.

The new Calculator is packed with useful features and functionality.

Desktop slideshow Windows 7 comes with some very attractive new wallpapers, and it's not always easy to decide which one you like the best. So why not choose a few, and let Windows display them all in a desktop slideshow? Right-click an empty part of the desktop, select Personalize Desktop Background,

Can You Find Me Now? If you have recently moved or changed your e-mail address, send your new contact information to [email protected]. Make sure you stay connected.

then hold down Ctrl as you click on the images you like. Choose how often you'd like the images to be changed (anything from daily to once every 10 seconds), select Shuffle if you'd like the backgrounds to appear in a random order, then click Save Changes and enjoy the show.

Monthly meetings are held the last Tuesday of each month in the Blue Room, Ground Floor, Mobile Government Plaza from noon to 1 p.m.

Auto arrange your desktop If your Windows 7 desktop has icons scattered everywhere then you could rightclick and select View Auto arrange, just as in Vista. But a simpler solution is just to press and hold down F5, and Windows will automatically arrange its icons for you. New WordPad formats By default WordPad will save documents in Rich Text Format, just as before. But browse the Save As Format list and you'll see you can also save (or open, actually) files in the Office 2007 .docx or OpenDocument .odt formats.

Kenny Stewart is a network/technical services manager with the Mobile County Commission Administration.
