TABLE 6A: CULTURAL RESOURCES Session 1 •

Missing: Visitor Info and Living Heritage

Combine Square and Verizon Plaza (close 14th Street)

Maybe close 15th Street – Landmark Block o Feels disassociated from Square

Redeveloping landmark could provide funds for Square

Include cultural Center in another building

Market shed in front of AMC

Shed could activate square

Programming used to activate area – concerts, fountains (CH Plaza)

Remove wall near AMC / 2100 to open up / access / views

Have view-stands from Square down to CH Plaza

Maybe reduce size of CH fountain to have more seating, etc.

Trees and flowering trees

Activate Verizon Plaza

Need some enclosure for square – draw people in

Close 15th – more green space

Some don’t want 15th closed – well used during week

One – put County building on CSW

Other – put it in front of judicial plaza

Maybe amphitheater on Verizon – use guide

Put Cultural Center on top or ground floor of County building

Maybe amphitheater in CH Plaza

TABLE 6B: CULTURAL RESOURCES

1. What makes Arlington unique? What exists and how do we make it better? o Government building with 1st floor civic space – library with historical information Blend / connect Interior and exterior spaces Used for public events during inclement weather o Keep movie theater but mix features to an art house theater: maybe underground o Arlington Heritage Center Showcase Museum, open space One stop center for visitors in County building o Keep open space / public sculpture o Mother and Soldier Tree should be preserved

2.

Investigation #2 o Recognize importance of trees – make them a focal point in new public space o Keep scale of Courthouse; not buildings o Retain Farmer’s market – “The Shed” idea

Mixed use in future 6. building

Liked the hydroplane

Air quality monitoring public art could be depressing

Monument axis – have County building with cultural facility on roof to take advantage of views

Maybe not just a big green lawn – things to do

Trees

Market shed could activate

Maybe County building on AMC / CSW

Summer pond / Winter skating rink on Verizon Plaza

Green roofs

Activity area / green on roof of County building

One liked closed market shed idea

Maybe close 15th

Closed markets on landmark

Maybe theater below grade

Public art replacing lampposts (sculptures that light up)

Public art in center of square

Art leading people (like metal people in NY subway (Tom Otterness, “Life Underground”)

Animal statues – lead people

Seating important – not everyone will sit in grass o Encourages people to stay

Grassy / open area in center

Parking underground

Lower building heights on Landmark

2 levels of Cultural Center in County building – one on rooftop and one lower if it rains

Differentiate government building with architecture

Maybe develop on Landmark better than open space because of traffic volumes

Close 15th on weekends, maybe

Concerts on Court House Plaza used to activate the area

Preserve as much open space as possible

Closed Farmers market

Not just lawn

Activate Verizon

Public art as wayfinding

Some scale of historical buildings be maintained or keep historical facades and build up

Heavy (not steal-able) moveable furniture – tables and chairs, like in Europe
