Cooperation

COOPERATION Cooperation is 2 or more persons working towards a common goal. This is a skill your students will need throughout their life. However right now, it is difficult skill for them to master, because they are still in the “me” stage. They will spend the next few years hearing, “Remember, we share”. And believe it or not, cooperation will sink in.

How does cooperation fit into martial arts?. Tournaments can be very long, and although it is fun to watch your friends, waiting your turn can seem like an eternity. If you are the first to do something, you have to wait until the rest of the group has had a turn. In other words, cooperation is waiting for your turn and sharing equipment

SHARING DAY NOTE: You need to in form parents 1 week prior to sharing day to make sure they bring a favourite toy to class

Objective: The student will share a favourite toy and see it will be returned

Equipment: each student brings a favourite toy, also have some extras in case not everyone brings 1, instructors and assistants are to also bring a favourite toy

Program: The students will bring their favourite toy and allow others to hold it. Have the students sit in a circle with their toys. Make 2 circles if to many students

SAY

• Does everyone have a toy? I brought my ___________. It is special to me, because __________. I know your toy is special to you and you wouldn’t want to loose it. I wouldn’t want to loose my ____________. I wouldn’t mind if you held my ______________, because I know you would be careful and not hurt it. I also know that you would give it back when I asked for it. • I see a lot of really neat things I would like to see closer. I’ll tell you what. Lets sit in a circle and shar our toys. We will pass them around the circle allowing everyone to hold our toy, but it will come back to you. No one will be mean or hurt a toy, because they will want their toy to be treated nicely. Have the students pass their toys to the students on their left.

Give them 10-15 sec and give a signal to pass to the left again. Continue until all the toys are back to their original owners.

• That was a lot of fun. You brought some very nice thing with you and you will be taking them home today. Sometimes when we have a special toy or item, we don’t want other to touch it , because it is ours, not theirs. But if we don’t share our toys, we can have fun with them. Sometimes we have very special or breakable toys and our parents tell us not to play with them unless they are there. That’s different. Our everyday toys are more fun when we have someone to play with and share • Thing what it would be like if you came to class and I said “you can play here, but don’t touch my stuff” cause its my stuff. I don’t want you to touch my gear, bags or anything that is mine”. Would that be a fun class?. No, we have to share and wait our turn, but it is fun to be with the other students. I have a lot of fun when we are here and I like to share the school equipment with you. Class and playing and school are so much more fun when we share our toys and take turns.

TEAMWORK Objective: The student will work together to accomplish a goal

Equipment: 1 hula hoop per group

Program: The children will work together to pass a hula hoop around a circle

SAY

• Are you ready for fun?. Today we are going to work on teamwork, by passing a hula hoop around a circle. Does that sound easy. • Well there is one little catch. You will be in a circle holding hands? How can you pass the hula hoop to the person next to you, if you are both holding hands? You and 1 or 2 assistants hold hands with the hula hoop resting on your arm and the persons next to you. Pass the hula hoop by putting your head throught it and then your feet one at a time, or feet first and then head. The smaller student will have an easier time. • Do you think that you can do that?. Lets try! Have the students get in a circle and put the hula hoop between 2 students. If you have a lot of students, you can use 2 or 3 hula hoops spread out among the students • Was that fun? Did your neighbour help by moving his or her hand up and down to move the hula hoop? So we all worked together to get the hula hoop around the circle. That is called teamwork. You didn’t always have a hula hoop with you, but when you did, your neighbour helped you and you helped your neighbour.

COOPERATIVE DRAWING Objective: The student will work together in pairs to colour in a book

Ok so today we are going to colour in a book, but to show we are cooperating with each other we are only going to colour in 1 page while your partner colours in the opposite page. Put the students in pairs and give them 1 colouring book between 2, open it up at a page and tell each student which page they are to colour in and make sure that they only colour that page.

Look what we did together! I bet that any spider would be proud to have a web as beautiful as this.
