Cornerstone Bible Church is a ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ to the greater Atlanta area. Our mission as part of the universal body of Christ is to glorify God by making disciples of Jesus Christ at home and abroad. We do this as a local assembly by equipping members to find undiscipled people, to fold them into God’s flock, to feed them to maturity, and to forward them into the mission.

Transition Q&A Today, there will be a transition Q&A session after service from 12-1 PM, in the Sanctuary. Childcare for infants will be provided. All are welcome to join and bring questions. New Precepts study

Beginning on September 11, Dennis Bura will lead a new Precepts study in the book of Philippians. Knowing that the Apostle Paul was chained to a guard in an ancient Roman prison and enduring that misery — which we can only imagine — and all the while writing this book, which we can honestly call Paul's "Ode to Joy" or at least, "Message of Joy" — it is truly amazing, convicting and inspiring, all at once. So, in whatever situation of life you find yourself, we can assure you Philippians will be helpful and encouraging for you. Contact Dennis Bura to sign up and receive your study material: [email protected] More Bible Studies…

Men of the Word will begin a new study on September 5, at 6:30 AM, here at Cornerstone. This new study that Doug has written is:" Then and Now: Studies in the Kingdom of God." All men are welcome to join! Also beginning on September 5, at 7:00 PM, is Women in Scripture; this fall they will open Luke (1-11) including Jesus’ early ministry and powerful teaching. This class is open to all women of the church and beyond. So if you have a neighbor or co-worker you'd like to study God's word with, invite them! There is no child care in the evening class, but the day class which begins on September 6, at 10:00 AM, does have child care. Let Lorie Steele know if you plan to bring your child(ren) if you have never participated before. This class is open to all women of CBC and the community.

Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy Come, ye sinners poor and needy, Weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to save you, Full of pity, love and pow’r. Refrain: I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O there are ten thousand charms. 3. Let not conscience make you linger, Nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness He requireth is to feel your need for Him. 4. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Lost and ruined by the fall; If you tarry till you’re better, You will never come at all. When Morning Gilds the Skies When morning gilds the skies, My heart awaking cries; May Jesus Christ be praised! Alike at work and prayer, To Jesus I repair; May Jesus Christ be praised! 2. The night becomes as day When from the heart we say, May Jesus Christ be praised! The pow’rs of darkness fear, When this sweet song they hear: May Jesus Christ be praised! 4. Be this, while life is mine, My canticle divine: May Jesus Christ be praised! Be this th’eternal song Thro’ all the ages long: May Jesus Christ be praised! We Are Called to Be God’s People

We are called to be God’s people, Showing by our lives His grace, One in heart and one in spirit, Sign of hope for all the race. Let us show how He has changed us And remade us as His own; Let us share our life together As we shall around the throne.

Co-op needs volunteers The Lilburn Co-Op needs volunteers for telephone intake any weekday, and for any amount of time from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Our intake volunteers help by identifying potential eligibility, discerning immediate needs, guiding clients to other resources, and scheduling appointments. This calls for good communication skills and a desire to deliver compassionate service to the neediest members of our community. If anyone would be interested in helping us help them, please come by or call (770) 931-8333 and ask for Sharon. Merry Christmas! Now that I have your attention! September 10, will be the first rehearsal for choir and handbells as we prepare for our 17th Annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols (Sunday evening, December 10 at 6 PM — put on your calendar now!). We are fortunate once again to have Andy Chappell directing bells and choir. Bell rehearsal begins at 4:15 PM in the choir room, and choir at 5:30 PM. Our usual and faithful ringers and singers are expected, and other interested parties are always welcome to come. For questions, please contact Sandra Clements at clementsjs@comcast. net. Thanks Be to God! Foundations of the Faith Beginning August 27, there will be a new Sunday School class starting. It's just what it says it is: a foundational look at what we believe here at Cornerstone. It is

a required class as part of the membership process, but anyone can join the class and brush up on their knowledge of the basic tenets of our faith. The class will meet at 9:30 in the RT room each Sunday for thirteen weeks. Join us for the fellowship and study! The power of weakness

In Tramp for the Lord, Corrie ten Boom describes traveling to Russia during the Cold War — when Christians were being persecuted — to thank an old woman who’d been secretly translating Christian books (including ten Boom’s). Ravaged by multiple sclerosis, the woman could move only an index finger. Yet with it she typed constantly, translating words while praying for people who’d eventually read them. Ten Boom’s reaction was, “Oh Lord, why don’t you heal her?” But the woman’s husband said God had a purpose in his wife’s suffering. Although the secret police closely watched other Christians, they left this woman alone, assuming she couldn’t accomplish anything. Jesus works through our weaknesses, making his power perfect in them (see 2 Corinthians 12:9). He doesn’t ask if we’re capable — only if we’re willing.

Advice for Students & Parents at Back-to-School Time THIS WILL BE ON THE TEST | Warren Cole Smith | BreakPoint | Aug 11, 2017 It’s back-to-school time for many millions of Americans—to be specific, around 80 million. It’s hard to believe, but according to the U.S. Census Bureau, about one in four Americans currently attend school. That includes, according the Census Bureau, “children going to nursery school and elementary school, young adults attending high school and college, and adults taking classes to obtain a degree or diploma.” Given the importance of education in shaping our worldview, and the amount of time, money, and energy we put into the process, it’s important to take steps to ensure that this investment is well spent. Here are some tips I have accumulated over the years to help you be good stewards of your educational investment. Take Notes. According to a study by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer of Princeton University and UCLA respectively, students who write out their notes by hand actually learn more than those who type their notes on laptops. Over the course of several experiments, Mueller and Oppenheimer tested students’ memories for factual detail, conceptual comprehension, and synthesizing capabilities after half of them took notes by hand and the other half by computer. Students who used laptops cranked out more words than hand-writers did, but the hand-writers ended up with a stronger conceptual understanding across the board. I would go even one step further: Copy all your notes over when you get back to your dorm room. When I was a freshman at the University of Georgia, I went to a senior on my hall who had a 4.0 average and he told me that copying his notes every day helped him organize both his notes and his thoughts, and forced him to confront immediately concepts he did not understand. He could then ask his teacher the next day, allowing him to learn the concept and to show the teacher he cared. Talk with your Teacher. Take advantage of every opportunity to interact with your teacher. That means visiting during office hours or “extra help” sessions. Several things will happen if you seize these opportunities. First, you will learn more. The extra time you spend engaging the topic will inevitably cause you to understand the topic better. Secondly, your questions are helpful to the teacher. Questions help a good teacher understand what his or her students are not understanding and will motivate the teacher to pause, to repeat, and to emphasize these topics. Finally, never forget that teachers are people, too. The relationship you build with that teacher will be fruitful and rewarding in and of itself. But also remember that most grading systems include a level of subjectivity, and the time and effort you spend on a teacher may make a difference if you are on the fence between an A or a B, or a D and an F, and your teacher has to decide how much credit to give you for effort. HALT. Years ago, I heard that we are more likely to make bad decisions when we are hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. These four words form the acronym HALT. So if you are feeling any of these things, then HALT. Stop. Take steps to fix these problems before you proceed. It’s easy to fix being hungry and tired. Get something to eat, or get a good night’s sleep. This advice applies especially to the practice of “cramming” before an exam. If I am keeping up every day with my studies, my experience is that it is rare for an extra hour of study to help my performance more than an extra hour of sleep. Attend to Spiritual Matters. Of course, it is harder to fix being angry or lonely. Anger and loneliness are usually symptoms of deeper underlying causes. They usually are, at root, relationship issues. We are angry or lonely when our relationships with God and others are broken or bruised. But that does not mean we are powerless to deal with them. If you are going off to college for the first time, find a church, a campus ministry, and a group of Christian friends. And do it quickly: The first few weeks will set the pattern for your school year, so make your spiritual life a priority. These few bits of advice are, of course, not enough to guarantee a successful year ahead. There’s much more to know, and knowing is not enough. In fact, the Bible teaches that knowledge without spiritual wisdom “puffs up” (I Cor. 8:1). So I recommend a few resources for those who want to go deeper. No less an authority than theologian J.P. Moreland called Jonathan Morrow’s Welcome to College “The single best volume I have ever read for preparing students for how to follow Jesus and flourish as his disciple in college.” The Colson Center’s John Stonestreet wrote an excellent introduction to the latest edition. J. Budziszewski’s How to Stay Christian in College has been out for many years, but is regularly revised and remains a classic. I’ve heard it said that education is like mountain climbing. Both are hard and involve danger, but the view from the top is more than worth the effort. My prayer for all those engaged in education this year—as students, teachers, parents, or grandparents—is that they find not just their view, but their worldview, enhanced in Christ-honoring ways. Warren Cole Smith is an investigative journalist and author as well as the Colson Center vice president for mission advancement.

= Please pray for the new ministries that are beginning soon. Ask God to provide the persons and wisdom for each ministry and those leading that He may be glorified in all of it. Please remember the following special missions requests taken from our monthly prayer guide. Numbers refer to days of the month. 20. This week we are going to concentrate our prayers on the Bibleless People Prayer Project, and especially for languages in the Caucasus Region which is in eastern Europe and western Asia, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea—there are more than 50 ethnic groups who all need Bibles in their own languages. Pray for good relationships—that the missionaries will be able to make connections with people who are open and willing to listen to the Word. Meeting one person who accepts them can be the shifting point in the entire region. The region is very closed off to outsiders so missionaries can get very lonely. Pray the Lord would provide for their personal needs as they serve Him. And pray that high-value friendships develop into lasting partnerships. 21. We need to pray for breakthroughs. Persistent prayer brings down strongholds. Pray against closed-mindedness, pride, and suspicion. Pray that God will provide opportunities for the Word to be translated by locals and shared freely. May the local speakers not turn away or be too afraid to ask questions and accept Christ. Pray and believe that God will soften their hearts for salvation. 22. Today we will concentrate on praying for the missionaries in this region to gain influence. Pray the people will be open to letting outsiders into their communities and learn to trust them. Pray that the missionaries will find chances to be loving and kind to the people. Pray for opportunities for jobs and respectable positions to open up. May God-loving people be put in the right time, right place, and right situations to speak freely about the Gospel.

23. The missionaries cannot do everything themselves. Pray that friends and locals will help. Pray specifically for: ◆ An Exegetical checker: This is a person skilled in both the original languages of the Bible, and in the local language. ◆ A Mother Tongue Translator: One with a full knowledge of the local language, linguistically skilled, and spiritually prepared. ◆ A Grammatical Stylistic Editor: A local language person with grammatical and editing experience. ◆ A Translation Consultant: A trained Bible translation consultant—one who is available for the task. 24. For the rest of the week we will refer to God's Word and ask Him to follow through on His promises to us. Matthew 9:36-38 Pray for the Lord of the Harvest to give the right person/people, at the right time, into the right relationships; the Father knows best! Luke 18:1-8 According to Jesus, if you hope to see fruit against deeply entrenched strongholds of evil, you must be persistent in prayer over the long-tern, like this widow. I Cor. 16:14 "And do everything with love." Missionaries have concluded that the deepest heart hunger in Caucasus Muslim society is for genuine, unselfish agape love—so that when they function in agape love (I Cor. 13/ Gal. 5:22-23) to all, even and especially those who have treated them badly, it became a win-win situation. Agape love is both the most powerful Change Agent in a hard society, and it is also the End Goal of the Transformed Life. (Matt. 22:34-40) 25. Luke 10:2-7 As we think about each people-group culture of the Caucasus as a large intertwined "village", the clear understanding, that based on prayer and deep love, the missionaries are the first of all to look and discern and connect with a person of peace within the culture, and then to walk through that door of real relationship into the rest of relationships that this will lead to. John 5:19 Pray that they will follow Jesus' pattern of carefully watching and noticing where the Father is opening doors, opening relationships, showing people with an open heart—and pray for representatives of Jesus to walk through those doors. 26. II Cor. 10:4 Pray that the missionaries will use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. I Thess. 5:16-18 Pray that the missionaries will always be joyful, never stop praying, and be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for all who belong to Christ
