COUNTS! New Attendance Laws for 2017-2018_______________ The truancy laws in Ohio have been amended and now require all schools keep track of the number of hours each student is in school and out of school. Schools will no longer report absences from school as full days, half-days, or tardies. EVERY hour of the school day counts, including tardies, early dismissals, vacations, and doctor appointments. However, schoolsponsored field trips and athletic events do NOT count towards hours missed. All hours will be documented as excused or unexcused time. Excessive Absences, as defined by the State of Ohio, is when a student misses 38 hours in a month or 65 hours of excused or unexcused hours in a school year. Once a student exceeds the threshold of hours permitted, an Absence Intervention Team meeting will be scheduled with the parent/guardian along with the student to discuss absence concerns. Habitual Truancy, as defined by the State of Ohio, is when a student accumulates 30 consecutive unexcused hours, or 42 unexcused hours in a month, or 72 or more unexcused hours in a school year. Once a student exceeds the threshold of hours permitted, an Absence Intervention Team meeting will be scheduled with the parent/guardian along with the student to create and implement an Absence Intervention Plan. Failure for a parent/guardian to appear, or otherwise participate in the Absent Intervention Meeting, will result in the school developing a plan without their input. Failure of parental participation may also result in reporting to Clermont County Children Services. If the student fails to comply with the Intervention Plan, a Complaint of Truancy will be filed with the Clermont County Juvenile Court.
