Cowboy Sam big coup for CQ Capras RUGBY LEAGUE Jenna Johnstone [email protected]

NORTH Queensland Cowboys under-20 player Sam Smith has been granted an immediate release to join the Capras for the remainder of the season. The 19-year-old approached the Cowboys on Friday, requesting the release to return home to Central Queensland. “It was a personal decision for me. I wasn’t happy with my football and where it was heading,” Smith said. “I want to focus on playing good rugby league for the Capras and finishing off the season well.” Smith was contracted with the Townsville club until the end of this season, after signing a four-year deal in 2011. The Gladstone Valleys junior will join the Capras at

training next week in a massive coup for the struggling club. “I only signed the contract yesterday (Monday) and still have a fair bit to learn about the club,” Smith said. “I played a lot of my junior representative football under the Capras banner so I’m looking forward to making my top-grade debut.” Smith admitted the Intrust Super Cup was a step up from the National Youth Competition (NYC) but was keen to become a regular on the state league circuit. “I’m excited about playing that higher level of football,” he said. “Under-20s is fast football but Intrust Super Cup is a lot more physical because you are coming up against grown men. “I’m going in with a really positive attitude and the desire to improve my game of football.” Capras’ coach Lionel Harbin welcomed Smith’s

A lot of them have niggles and are really desperate for that week off to freshen up. “Unfortunately for Webby (Ian Webster) things aren’t looking good at the moment

learnt a lot in his time up there in Townsville and it’s a bonus for us that he’s coming back to play in CQ. “He still has a dream to play in the NRL and there is a pathway here with the Capras for him to do that.” Harbin said this weekend’s bye had come at the right time after the Capras suffered three

HOCKEY A JARROD Bass penalty corner midway through the second half almost proved the impetus for a second-half comeback from the Frenchville Rovers at Kalka Shades on Saturday. But the depleted outfit struggled to withstand a Harmsworth brothers surge in their 6-4 loss to the top-seeded Wanderers. Frenchville captain Bass said two Ryan Gohdes’ penalty corners were enough to see Wanderers ahead 2-0 at half-time. “We had a chat in the break about restricting their goals and fixing things up defensively,” Bass said. “We were a little bit

behind the eight ball in the opening half and knew we had to improve.” The return of Rovers’ frontman Jackson Fraser helped the under-strength squad score a succession of quick goals to level the score 3-3 midway through the second half. But it wasn’t enough to restrict a late onslaught from Wanderers, who ran out victors. “It was a pretty good game considering both sides were depleted,” Bass said. “I think we put the loss down to our defence. We can’t be letting in six goals and expect to win.” Bass praised the efforts of 14-year-old Lachlan Sisley
