CREATE A SUPERHERO SUPER CHARACTER Character Education
GRADE LEVELS Grades 3–6 TIMEFRAME 30 minutes ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL GOALS Students will: • Work on their writing skills as they create Superhero Super Characters • Use their oral language and listening skills to participate in discussions MATERIALS NEEDED • Paper and pencils • Markers, colored pencils, crayons, and/or paint CLASS CONFIGURATION • Seated at tables INSTRUCTOR PREPARATION • Make a sample or use the one included CLASS PREPARATION • Explain project and show sample to students STEPS 1. As a class, brainstorm character traits that are positive: “It is good to be _____________________________.” (helpful, honest, kind, respectful, responsible, etc.) 2. Write brainstorm ideas where all can see them. 3. Tell students that they will each create a “Superhero Super Character.” 4. Each student will decide a name, mission, power, and emblem for their character. Example: • Name: Super Judge • Mission: to ensure justice so that right always prevails (wins) • Powers: to read minds and to recognize the truth • Emblem: a thumbs-up 5. Each student will create a small poster introducing his/her Superhero Super Character. Have students use pencils first so that corrections can easily be made and then have students color or paint their poster. 6. Hang posters up and have students take an art walk to view them. ADAPTATIONS/VARIATIONS • Have students present their characters to the class before hanging up the posters. • Allow students to make posters 3D by adding yarn, pipe cleaners, tissue paper, etc.
