POINT

WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH. Form pairs, and give each pair paper, scissors, three Wikki Stix, and a Bible. Set out Buzz Markers. Have partners draw and cut out a made-up superhero. Ask each pair to show its superhero and describe his or her strength. SAY: Hear ye! Hear ye! The Bible tells us Samson was really strong, and he loved a woman named Delilah. Samson’s enemies, the Philistines, paid Delilah to find out why Samson was so strong. So four times she tried to find out Samson’s secret. Here’s what he said the first time. Have partners read Judges 16:6-7. Pretend your Wikki Stix are bowstrings, and tie up your superhero. Pause. Delilah tied up Samson with bowstrings, but Samson snapped them. Pause for kids to untie their superheroes. Here’s what happened the second time she asked. Have partners read Judges 16:10-11. Tie up your superhero again. Pause. The Bible says that this time Samson snapped the ropes like threads. Pause.

Here’s Delilah’s third attempt. Have partners read Judges 16:13. Weave your Wikki Stix into braids, and wrap them around your superhero. Pause. This time Samson just yanked his hair free. Pause. Delilah whined and nagged until Samson told her the truth. Have partners read Judges 16:17. While Samson slept, Delilah cut off his hair. Put your braids on your superhero’s head, and then pull them off. Pause. When Samson woke up, the Philistines captured him, blinded him, and made him a slave. ASK: What do you think about the way Samson lost his strength? SAY: Samson’s long hair was a sign of his promise to live for God. When he let Delilah know his secret—even though he knew she’d trap him—he gave up that promise, so God’s strength left him. ASK: Explain whether it’s possible to return to God when you’ve turned from him. SAY: The Philistines had a party and brought Samson out to laugh at him. Read Judges 16:28-30. Samson died knowing WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH.

Build It!

POINT

WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH. Have kids form groups of four. Give each group five sheets of paper and access to glue and tape. SAY: Each team has five minutes to make the strongest structure you can, using only the paper, glue, and tape. It’ll have to hold up under a lot of weight, so make sure your construction is really solid! Allow time for each team to create its masterpiece. Display them in the front of the room. SAY: Samson was a strong man as long as his foundation was in God. It’s important to have a strong foundation when you’re building something. Let’s see how firm a structure your group has created. Ask for an assistant from each team. Have the assistants carefully place objects from your Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Kit or your room—such as pencils, Bible Buzz Cards, or Buzz Markers—on top of the structures to see which one holds the most weight. Then have kids read aloud Judges 16:13 and remove the least impor-

tant piece from their structures. Place objects on it again to test strength. Then have kids read aloud Judges 16:20 and remove the most important piece of their structures. Do one last test of strength. ASK: What did you do to make your structure strong?

How did removing each piece weaken your structure?

How did building a strong support compare to how God gave Samson strength?

How did breaking down your strong support compare to how Samson lost his strength?

SAY: Samson lied to Delilah three times, but by the third time he was getting pretty close to telling her the real secret of his strength: his hair. Sometimes we struggle with temptation, and we might just stick a toe into something we shouldn’t. Samson’s almost-truth about his secret was too close to turning away from God. When we’re struggling with temptation, we want to be as strong as our structures started out, so WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH.

Hold It!

POINT

WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH. Have kids line up. SAY: Let’s see how much strength each of you has. Everyone, raise your arms straight above your head, and flatten your hands with your palms up, so you’ll be able to balance the Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Box on them. Your goal is to pass the box back and forth on your hands ten times, with everyone’s arms remaining up the whole time.

SAY: Samson’s whole life had been marked by a vow to serve God. Part of that vow meant never cutting his hair. Maybe Samson was tired of keeping that vow, because he must’ve known just what Delilah would do when he told her his secret. She’d already tried it three times! Whatever the reason, Samson turned from God when he told Delilah how he got his strength. And God took the strength away. Like Samson, we all get tired and weak sometimes. But God never gets tired or weak, so WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH.

Place the Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Box on the hands of the first person in line. Allow time for kids to pass the box. ASK: Explain whether you felt strong or weak in this activity.

What’s an area of your life where you feel weak?

How do you want God to strengthen you in that area?

Reflect It!

POINT

WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH. SAY: In a moment, I’m going to play a song that tells us more about God. While the song is playing, think about an area in your life where you need strength. Pray about that situation as the song plays. Play  “I Can Do Everything Through Christ” (Philippians 4:13) (track 12) on the CD as kids pray. Then play it again, and have a willing child lead everyone in singing. SING: For I can do everything, Everything through Christ Who gives me strength. Oh-oh, oh-oh, The strength I need, The strength I need. (Repeat.) So we sing Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, Jesus gives me the strength I need, you see. Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, Jesus gives me all the strength I need.

Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, Jesus gives me the strength I need, you see. Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, Jesus gives me, he gives me the strength I need. You give me the strength I need. (Repeat from the beginning.) You give me the strength I need. “I Can Do Everything Through Christ” (Philippians 4:13) by Ben Glover. © 2005 Group Publishing, Inc. All rights reserved.

ASK: Share with a partner what you prayed about.

What does this song teach you about relying on God for strength?

How can you rely on Christ for strength this week?

SAY: Samson learned the hard way that his strength came from God. When we try to go through life on our own energy, we get tired and weak. But when WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH, we can do anything.

Define It!

POINT

WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH.

ASK: What definition did you come up with based on your verse?

Form pairs. Pass out paper, pencils, and Bibles. ASK: What do you think it means to be strong in God? SAY: The Bible has a lot to say about getting strength from God. I’m going to give each pair a verse. Your job is to read the verse and write a definition for strength based on what the verse says.

Tell about a time you were strong in one of those ways.

SAY: Being strong in God shows itself in a lot of different ways. But in order to stay strong in God, we need to stand firm and not get tired the way Samson did. Read aloud Judges 16:16. Even when we’re tired of our situation, WE TURN TO GOD FOR STRENGTH.

Give each pair one of these verses: Psalm 18:29; Psalm 23:3; Psalm 73:26; Isaiah 40:31; Philippians 4:13. Allow time for pairs to work.
