Creative, Expressive Portraits photo reference guide Having a good photo reference will go a long way in helping you create a successful painting. Make sure to bring lots of photos that include one or more figures so that you have plenty to choose from. Print out your photos as large as you can on high quality inkjet or laser paper. You want to be able to see detail, shadow shapes, and features.

* be shot in natural light (no flash) * have good light and dark patterns * have visible shadow patterns on the face and/or clothing * be clear and detailed * include one or more figures * be interesting to you * be printed on the high-qualilty photo paper

Notice that a flash has been used, washing out the features. The subjects are posed and smilling and, overall, this photo would make a very boring portrait!
