Overview
Diaries, Biographies, and Autobiographies ●
This tutorial encourages you to remember that all writers are initially readers, and so it recommends that you read a wide variety of texts in different styles in order to get a feel for the diverse forms of written text that exist. The tutorial will then move on to discuss particular forms of creative writing, namely: the diary, the autobiography, and the biography.
Narrative Voices and Style ●
This tutorial will introduce you to the concepts of person and voice. In an attempt to underline the importance of these literary notions within written texts, it will consider the use of these concepts within the context of wellknown novels and plays. It will then move on to explore clichés, conventions, and formulae within the novel genre before ending with a section that is designed to improve your critical awareness of different forms of text.
Plot, Character, and Dialogue ●
This tutorial will consider the creative provenance of a piece of written text. One literary commentator has famously argued that there are only 7 basic plots in the whole of the literary canon. In light of this argument, is it possible to create a truly unique piece of text? And what makes a good piece of creative writing – abiding by these set rules or consciously deviating from them? This tutorial will attempt to answer these questions.
Poetic and Other Devices ●
This tutorial will begin by taking a look at the concept of defamiliarisation, that is, looking at and describing familiar things but from a completely different perspective. It will then move on to consider the effects of satire and parody before examining the relationship between form and content. The tutorial will end the course by providing you with some information on creative writing courses that are offered by universities in the UK.
