Crooked Creek Food Pantry – Press Release New Pantry Opens to Serve Those in Need Friday, March 13, 2015 8:30 am EDT St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, in partnership with Eskenazi Health, Dow AgroSciences, and Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, announces the grand opening of the Crooked Creek Food Pantry at Eskenazi Health Center Pecar, 6940 N. Michigan Road, 10 a.m., Friday, March 13. The pantry will serve a neighborhood in North Central Indianapolis that ranked last in terms of economic power and privilege according to U.S. Census data. Ironically, it is an area surrounded by some of the wealthiest households, the census data showed. According to the founders, Crooked Creek Food Pantry attempts to bridge the gap between those in need and those who can provide assistance. The new pantry will be within walking distance for residents in need of this service, in space provided by Eskenazi Health Center Pecar. “The partnership just makes sense,” said Dr. Dawn Haut, chief physician executive at Eskenazi Health Center Pecar.

“Food and nutrition play a vital role in the health of our community,” said Dr. Haut. “Prevention, early intervention, and effective chronic disease management are crucial to staying healthy. Eating well is a key element to this. I can’t think of a better place to have a community food pantry than at a health center.” But food, much of which is supplied through Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, is only the beginning. “We understand hunger to be much more than a lack of food,” said St. Luke’s Outreach Pastor Jamalyn Peigh Williamson. “We want the pantry to be a gateway to relationships that can help infuse hope and create transformation from a life of struggle to a life of stability.” “Items will be personal choice for people visiting the pantry,” said Pastor Peigh Williamson. “It’s a matter of dignity. Families will select from the shelves the items they want, with quantities based on the size of the household.” “Our global headquarters is located in Pike Township where our employees work to develop innovative agricultural solutions that help feed the growing population,” said Kay Kuenker, Vice President, Government Affairs, Public Affairs, and Sustainability, Dow AgroSciences. “Our employees not only devote their lives to address global food insecurity, but also – through our employee-led Hunger Solutions Network – volunteer their time, energy, and knowledge to support local hunger programs like this.”
