Jenny Severns joined the Racers in July of 2010 as the head coach for cross country and track & field at Murray State.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to work with the athletes and staff at Murray State University,” said Severns. “We have all the tools necessary to succeed and I cannot wait to take the program to the next level.” “Jenny brings good experience and a commitment to developing the whole person,” said Matt Kelly, Associate AD for Internal Operations. “Her student-athletes have excelled in the
community, classroom, and in their sport. Her style and ideals fit very nicely into what we want to do here at Murray State FIRST SEASON In her first season at the helm of the women’s cross country team, Severns guided the women’s cross country team to a third-place finish at the OVC Championship and saw her first runner earn All-OVC honors. Senior Katelyn Jones was named to the AllOVC Second Team for her 10th-place finish. The Racers also earned the 2010 OVC Sportsmanship Award. In 2011 freshman Carolyne Tanui earned All-OVC Second Team honors, as the team finished fifth. The men’s cross country team was also a top performer in the classroom at Murray State, recording the highest team GPA in the athletic department for 2010-11. Coach Severns also serves as the NCAA Southeast Regional Representative.

PRIOR TO MSU Severns came to the Racers after spending four seasons as an assistant cross country and track & field coach at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. While with the Spartans, she helped the men’s cross country team to four-consecutive top-five finishes at the Southern Conference Championships, including the team’s highest finish in school history (3rd in 2006 and 2009). During Severns’ tenure at UNCG, she coached 15 All-SoCon athletes, three Junior National qualifiers, one ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team honoree and helped her studentathletes break 26 school records. Prior to UNCG, Severns was an assistant coach at Dickinson College (2005-06), where she led the cross country team to its sixthstraight Centennial Conference title, the NCAA Mideast Region crown and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships. The men’s cross country team placed second at the Centennial Conference meet and fifth at the NCAA Mideast Regional, and had a male runner earn the school’s first cross country All-American honors. In track and field, Severns produced one All-American, eight conference champions, 33 all-conference performers, and eight school and three conference marks. Severns got her coaching start at Mt. Pleasant High School in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. She served as a volunteer assistant track & field coach from March 2001-June 2002 and then returned in January of 2004 as the assistant coach for cross country and track & field. During Severns’ second stint, the girls track & field team won the conference and regional crowns and placed sixth at the state meet. In cross country, Mt. Pleasant won the girls’ conference championship. The Flint, Mich., native was a member of the Central Michigan University cross country and track & field teams, and earned a bachelor’s degree in applied arts in 2002. She received a master’s degree in sports administration from CMU in May 2011. Severns also has a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification, an Endurance Event Specialist certification and a Track and Field Management certification. Besides her coaching responsibilities, Severns is still a distance runner. She has been a competitor in 15 marathons, including six Boston Marathons.
Assistant Coach 4th Season Michigan, 2007
Adam Kiesler joined the Murray State cross country and track & field staff in August of 2010 as an assistant coach for both programs. Kiesler primarily works with the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and multi-events athletes at Murray State. As a member of the Murray State program, Kiesler has coached an U.S.A Olympic Trials Qualifier in the 100m and 200m dash in 2012 (Love), Three USTFCCCA All-Americans (200m Indoor, 100m Outdoor, 200m Outdoor, 2012) a NCAA Indoor Championship qualifier (200m dash, 2012) NCAA Outdoor Championship qualifier (100m and 200m, 2012) OVC Track Athlete of the Year (2012 Outdoor, Alexis Love) Two OVC Athlete of the Meet (2012 Outdoor, Alexis Love, 2013 Outdoor, Tonia Pratt) USATF Junior Nationals qualifier (2012, 100m hurdles) 21 All-OVC performers and 13 OVC Champions. Kiesler has also coached athletes to ten new school records which include the 60m dash, 200m indoor dash, 60m hurdles, 200m dash, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4x100m relay, pole vault, indoor shot put, hammer throw. Kiesler came to the Racers after spending a season as a graduate assistant track & field coach at the University of Toledo where he oversaw student-athletes in sprints, hurdles, jumps and multi-events. Before joining the staff at Toledo, Kiesler was an assistant women’s track & field coach at Central Michigan University for two seasons. He helped produce nine CMU top-five performances, four All-MAC selections, and one NCAA Regional Qualifier. Kiesler was a member of the Michigan track & field teams from 2002-2007 where he competed in the long jump and multi-events. The native of Rochester, Ill., earned a bachelor’s degree in earth sciences in April of 2007 from Michigan and is currently pursuing his master’s degree at Murray State. Kiesler has also earned Level One and Level Two coaching certificates from the USA Track & Field Association. Kiesler has also earned a throwing event specialist certification from the USTFCCCA.

Graduate Assistant 1st Season Northern Iowa, 2012 Sam Kranz enters his first season with the Racers as a graduate assistant coach for the long, triple, and pole vault jumping events. Before coming to Murray State, Kranz was a volunteer assistant, working with pole vault, and multi-event athletes at the University of Northern Iowa during the 2012 season. While at UNI, Kranz assisted in the development of several high caliber athletes. Notable athletic achievements during this time include: 1 – 1st Team All-American 3 – National Qualifying performances 1 – Drake Relays Champion 2 – Conference Champions 8 – All-Conference Performances 5 – UNI All-Time Top 5 Performances Kranz is excited, and very optimistic about what the 2013-14 season will bring for the Racers, Kranz graduated from Northern Iowa in 2012 with a degree in English Education. As a student-athlete, Kranz competed in the pole vault. During which, he recorded 6 all conference finishes in the Missouri Valley. Of those finishes, Kranz took the top spot on three occasions while recording a personal best of 5.35m (17-6.5). Kranz was 7th at the NCAA regional meet in 2009, and competed in 3 NCAA Championships between 2010 and 2012. Kranz comes to Murray State as a USTFCCCA Certified MultiEvent Specialist and USA Track & Field Level I Coach.
