Crusader athletes enjoy exceptional fall

N

With playoffs looming, and the basketball teams closing in on tipoff, it’s time to start reflecting on the fall sports season. And it’s been exceptional, as Northwest Nazarene student athletes have racked up wins, records and a bevy of awards. On the record front, the women’s golf team set five records while the women’s cross country team set one new record and the men’s golf team tied a record. In their second season, the Crusader Photo by Kari Stetson Natalie Evans runs at the Roger Curran Invitational in Seplady golfers set a single-round team low NNU’s tember. Saturday, Evans set a school record in the 5K at the Inland three times, finally setting the bar at 323, Empire Classic, earning her GNAC Runner of the Week honors. a mark they no doubt will be shooting for come springtime.

Also, Samantha Miller set the individual single-round low, shooting a 74, breaking the previous record set by teammate Haley Gochnour (77). Gochnour’s 77 came in the Crusaders first round of the season in September against The College of Idaho. All those record efforts didn’t go unnoticed as Miller and Gochnour each earned GNAC Red Lion Golfer of the Week awards this fall. On the men’s side, Nick Hardy was a two-time GNAC Red Lion Golfer of the Week, and deservedly so. Hardy tied his own personal best round in relation to par, with a 3-under 69, to win a season-opening dual with The C of I, then he tied the school record with a round of 4-under 68 en route to winning the Sonoma State Men’s Golf Invitational, giving NNU its first tournament champion at the NCAA Division II level. Also turning in a record performance was Natalie Evans in cross country at the Inland Empire Classic over the weekend in Lewiston, Idaho. Evans ran a record time of 17 minutes, 31 seconds to finish fifth in the women’s 5-kilometer race. She has finished Top 8 or better in all five races this fall. Photo by Kari Stetson The effort earned her GNAC Red Lion Runner of the Week honors. But NNU women’s soccer coach Mary Trigg, pictured, and volleyball coach Doug English each earned their first career victories this fall. she was not alone as freshman Chase Cunningham also earned GNAC Red Lion Runner of the Week honors at the race in Lewiston after he led NNU, finishing 43rd in 25:44. It’s been an equally outstanding fall for Cunningham, who in his first season has been a consistent team leader and earned his first collegiate win at the Roger Curran Invitational hosted by NNU on Sept. 14. And, speaking of first wins, the fall saw first-year NNU coaches Doug English (volleyball) and Mary Trigg (women’s soccer) each collect their first career victories. English earned his first win on the road, a 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 win at Dixie State in the Crusaders second match of the season. Trigg picked up her first victory at home, topping rival The College of Idaho 2-0 in her team’s third game. And, speaking of the rivalry — which heats up with the first men’s basketball game on Tuesday, Nov. 5 — the Crusaders enjoyed a hugely successful fall competing head-to-head against the Coyotes. Along with the women soccer team’s win, the NNU men’s soccer team beat the C of I 3-0, the Crusader volleyball team topped the Yotes 22-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-21, 15-8, and the NNU men’s golf team bested the C of I in a dual match (291-300). The lone C of I win in head-to-head action was in women’s golf, making NNU 4-1 this fall in direct competition with its Canyon County rival to the West. And then there were the awards: 13 GNAC Player of the Week honors over the first six weeks of competition, with no less than one Crusader honored each week representing all seven NNU men’s and women’s fall sports. Earning those weekly awards were (see athlete photos on Page 1): Nick Hardy twice (men’s golf); Samantha Miller and Haley Gochnour (women’s golf); Argia Phillips (women’s soccer); Juan Perez, Ryan Foo and Fredy Razo (men’s soccer); Andrea Terpstra, Taylor Roberts and Jenna Caywood (volleyball); Natalie Evans (women’s cross country); and Chase Cunningham (men’s cross country).

A disappointing weekend VOLLEYBALL: The Crusaders hit the road for one match and it proved to be a disappointing evening as NNU fell 2624, 25-20, 25-18 at Central Washington.

N ews continued:

Elayna Rice led NNU with 12 kills and eight digs, Andrea Terpstra had 10 kills and three blocks, Taylor Roberts added 15 digs, Kaitlyn Tuholski made 10 digs and Michelle Terpstra added 28 assists in the match. MEN’S SOCCER: A late goal salvaged a point for the NNU men in a home game on Thursday before the Crusaders suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to St. Martin’s at home on Saturday. Fredy Razo’s goal with 45 seconds left in regulation gave NNU a 2-2 tie with Seattle Pacific on Thursday before the Saints snuck out of Nampa with a victory, despite playing short-handed the final 20 minutes against the Crusaders, who simply could not finish against SMU. WOMEN’S SOCCER: Despite outplaying two of the league’s top three teams in Central Washington and Seattle Pacific, the Crusaders took a pair of disappointing losses, falling 1-0 to the Wildcats and 2-1 to the Falcons. Despite the setbacks, Crusader coach Mary Trigg is feeling optimistic about the future of her team, as NNU proved it can play with the league’s best. Sarah Blum had NNU’s lone goal and Argia Phillips finished with seven total saves in the two games.
