Exercise includes: * Creating Filled Crystal Shapes * Editing Filled Shapes * Setting Individual Crystals To complete this exercise, CrystalWork module must be activated in the DesignWorks Software. Each module is activated through the purchase and installation of access codes available from the local BERNINA Dealer. Instructions are written for full DesignWorks Software Suite installation. Choose color either for visibility on the design space or choose a color that most closely resembles the finished project media to preview Crystal/Thread/Paint color options as they will appear on the final project. Different operating systems will place the BERNINA DesignWorks Sample folder in different locations. It is always easy to find the location by going to Programs> BERNINA DesignWorks> BERNINA DesignWorks Samples. Look at the file path across the top of the dialog box. That is where your samples will be located. The graphic may be scaled down. Refer to DesignWorks manual for details.

Converting the Design to Crystals • Select View > Backdrop> Hide. • Click in the corner of the white background and press Delete on the keyboard. • File > Save As. Navigate to the folder in which the design will be stored; name the file Crystal Tree and Save.

Notes:

Fit to Shape • Select the tree, note the software included the leaves connected to the branches as part of the tree object. • In Object Properties, Fill Tab, change the fill type to Crystal Fill. • Set these parameters in Object Properties: • Palette: Swarovski round • Size: SS 10 • Color: Smoked Topaz • Fill: Shape fit • H-spacing: 2.0 • V-spacing : 1.5 • Start angle: 45

Experiment with the spacing and Offset values; note the Offset adjusts the position of the Crystals in relation to the object outline but does not affect the spacing between the Crystals. Press Enter after each change to view the results.

Notes:

If Tool Options are not visible, from the main menu select View> Toolbars. Make sure Tool Options is checked.

NOTE: There are 3 control points, the first being the first crystal in the design. All other crystals will be placed based upon this first one. The second control point is the Horizontal spacing (H. spacing) and the third is Vertical spacing (V. spacing). These Control Handles can be used to edit the spacing visually by moving the control points within the object. Note: the same adjustments may be made within the Object properties box by entering numeric values. Any changes made to the nodes are reflected in the values indicated in the Object Properties box. Undo works with this function.

The offset value alters the distance the row of crystals is from the object outline, it does not affect the distance between each crystal.

Editing the Design cont: • From the main menu, select View to make sure Overlapping Crystals is checked. • An X will appear over any areas within the design that have overlapping Crystals. See the bird‘s eye. • Select the bird. In Object Properties, select Separate to Crystals. • Right click>Ungroup. Click away to deselect. • Zoom in with the mouse wheel. • Select and delete any of the crystals covered by the bird‘s eye. • Save As Edit 2.

Notes: Once separated, the crystal object is no longer able to be edited as a unit. This should be the final step in editing. Before separating, save a copy of the file for future editing options. When the object is separated, the crystals within the component of the design are grouped. Right click on the area and select Ungroup. Individual crystals can now be moved.

The CrystalWork Accessory Tool and compatible BERNINA embroidery machine are needed to execute a completed CrystalWork design.

Exporting the Crystal Design • To send the file to the machine, select File > Export > Crystals to Machine. • This design features a number of crystal color changes and sizes. Consider creating a separate template for each color for simplicity in setting the crystals. • From the Export to Machine dialog box, select color 1 and review the image to confirm there is ample distance between the stones (no overlapping areas). Export the file. • Repeat for each color in the design. Refer to the CrystalWork tool manual for details regarding the use of the tool.
