Get rid of greasy holiday foods
without clogging your pipes
Unless you are inviting a plumber over for a holiday meal, make sure that you are disposing of greasy, fatty food scraps the right way. Did you know that soap, detergent and bleach only temporarily cut grease? Fat, oil and grease eventually attach to the walls of sewer pipes, and that build-up of grease in pipes is the number one cause of sewage spills. n

Scrape uneaten food and sauces into the trash before washing the dishes or placing them in the dishwasher. Wipe cooking pan residue with a paper towel before washing and throw the towel in the trash. Mix small amounts of fat, oil and grease with absorbent waste, such as kitty litter, coffee grounds or paper towels before discarding. Dispose of fat, oil and grease into a plastic container. Dispose of used cooking oil responsibly and free at a household hazardous waste facility. Call Waste Management at 760-929-9400 for information.
Homeowners are responsible for the sewer pipe from their homes to the street. For more information, visit www.carlsbadca.gov/sewer.

City sprucing up streets The City of Carlsbad is resurfacing a number of roads as part of an annual program to extend the life of roadways and ensure smooth going for drivers. Streets were selected based on the age and condition of the roadway surface. An application of slurry seal protects the pavement surface from oxidation, weathering and cracking. Traffic could be affected and roads in some areas will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Work hours for this project are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. “Carlsbad has made it a priority to keep its streets in good condition,” said Project Engineer Jon Schauble. “We appreciate the public’s patience. We’ll get it done as quickly as we can.”

Ask the City
Why does my water bill keep going up
even though I am using less water?
Carlsbad relies on water imported from the Colorado River and Northern California for its entire drinking water supply. The cost of buying this imported water keeps increasing, so even though you might be using less water, your bill could still be higher than in previous years. In addition, there are fixed costs associated with providing water and maintaining the water system. With less water being sold, the fixed cost per unit of water goes up to cover those costs.
The cost of buying this imported water keeps increasing, so even though you might be using less water, your bill could still be higher than in previous years.
The City of Carlsbad is actively working to keep water costs as low as possible. A program to switch out existing water meters with new automated meters is already helping water customers better monitor
their use and detect leaks quickly. The city also offers free home water audits to help customers reduce their water use (and bills) as much as possible. To sign up, call 760-438-2722.
Dispose of trees, for free The City of Carlsbad is offering free, curbside pickup as well as drop-off bin locations for Christmas trees from Monday, Dec.
