Literacy In school we will learn:
To celebrate the marking of 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl – the world’s number one storyteller. The children will be studying the delightful and zangy coming of age story ‘Matilda.’ The children will be completing pre- and post-reading activities, investigating the authors style of writing and wondrous vocabulary, using figurative language and inference skills. They will emerge themselves in the story by visualizing and analyzing characters as well as examining school life, bullying, fear, family, personal growth, and the supernatural. The children will then create a biography about the author, seeing how boarding schools, famous candy stores, and world travel all influenced his writing.

Your child will have a reading book and journal to make a note of what they have read. The more you could encourage your child to read at home the quicker they will be able to sound out spellings and widen their vocabulary. Ask your child to read aloud and ask them if they understand the meaning of new words they meet. You could also discuss words and phrases that capture their interest and imagination and if they can predict what might happen from details stated and implied in what they have read so far. A copy of the spelling word list for Year 5/6 from the National Curriculum will be sent home if you wish to practise these at home.
Numeracy Place value- Reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers to 1 000 000 and rounding any number to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10 000 and 100 000. Decimals: Identifying the place value of decimals to 3dp and round them to the nearest whole number and 1 dp. Addition & Subtraction: Undertake mental calculations with increasingly large numbers and more complex calculations. Measure: Interpret and construct pie charts and line graphs, convert between units of measure, area and perimeter of shapes. Multiplication & Division: Identifying common multiples and factors, prime, squared and cubed numbers. Formal written methods of long multiplication and long division.
Practising times tables on a daily basis including division facts e.g. 5x2=10, 10÷2=5. Rapid recall of squared numbers. E.g.: 6 x 6 = 36 Discuss what happens to numbers when they are multiplied or divided by 10, 100 and 1000, looking at how the place value changes and zero as a place holder. Practising converting measures for example, mm to cm, cm to m. They could measure and convert items at home.
Religious Education Creation – Children will be looking at the Genesis stories of creation as a way of explaining how God created the world. They will be observing how the story is captured in different ways throughout history, especially artwork. Children will also study the Beatitudes of Jesus and understand that they provide a guide for living as a disciple of Christ. Advent – Children will be looking at the messages of the Old Testaments prophets about the coming of the Messiah. They will study the birth of John the Baptist and understand why his birth was so unexpected. They will also know that the season is about celebrating the first coming of Jesus and preparing for him to come again. Christmas – The children will be looking at the main features of the Christmas story from Matthew’s Gospel and understand some reasons for King Herod’s anxiety over the birth of Jesus.
It will always be beneficial for children to attend mass and talk about the Liturgy and Gospel readings and why they are important to help deepen children’s understanding. Encouraging your child to talk about the kind of person God intends them to be and how this can be seen through their actions.

Science Living Things and Their Habitats – The children will be learning about the process of reproduction, and the life cycles of plants, mammals , amphibians, insets and birds. They will explore reproduction in different plants, including different methods of pollination. The children will have the opportunity to take cuttings from plants, creating clones of parent plants. They will learn about different types of mammals and their different life cycles. Furthermore, the children will learn about Jane Goodall and her work with the now endangered chimpanzees in Africa. They will explore metamorphosis in insects and amphibians , comparing their life cycles. Finally the children will explore the life cycles of birds, and write and star in their own wildlife documentary.
In school we will learn:
Humanities The children will be sailing back to the Dark Ages, where battles were rife and fear reigned. Children will be imagining they have landed on the panoramic beaches of Brancaster in Norfolk and creating diary entries as Saxons, describing how they might have felt as they travelled and viewed the scenes for the first time. The children will also use a range of historical source material to find out about King Arthur, a great leader who fought against the Angles and Saxons. They will learn about the Vikings and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor.

Children could research a plant or animal of their choice and record its life cycle.

If your child enjoys our class book Arthur High King Of Britain by Michael Morpurgo’, There are many other books they can enjoy written by the author. They could visit the local library and find out about any Saxon or Viking invasion in the local area or county.
They could also visit a zoo or farm to look at the baby animals and see the stages of their life cycle in action.
They could research Viking names and their meanings and make up suitable names for friends and family.

The Arts Art and Design: Improve mastery of art and design techniques including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials and look at great artists, architects anddesigners in history. Children will create an intricate Anglo-Saxon pattern, creating print blocks to print onto fabric. Design Technology: Select and form and use a wide range of materials and components to inform design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, or aimed at particular individuals Children will create models of Anglo-Saxon homes, and charms.
Art- If your child likes Art ask them to look at images of AngloSaxon coins. They could design their own coin or use modelling clay or other materials to make the coin look like metal. Look at animals in Viking art (Urnes or Jelling style) Children could design and draw their own imaginary beast to make a fantastic pattern Design- Try making some Anglo-Saxon bread or Viking flatbread. Research Viking embroidery patterns, using a needle and thread embroider a handkerchief.
