ABB in Hot Rolling Mills
ABB is one of the leading suppliers of electrical systems for hot rolling mills for flat and profile products. The Center of Excellence for Hot Rolling Mills is located in Västerås, Sweden. Its main business activities comprise complete electrical systems including advanced drive systems and motors, automation solutions and production con-
trol, together with a full range of professional services for the complete plant life cycle. • Powerful rolling mill control systems with • integrated information transparency • State-of-the-art drive systems with • Direct Torque Control, DTC • Low network impact
• Interstand Dimension Control, IDC, for rod and bar mills with • Improved tolerances and quality • Better mill utilization • Drive Dynamics Analysis Service, DDA, for • Longer drive life cycles • Professional services
ABB offers complete and fully integrated electrical and automation systems, process knowhow, tuning and professional services, focusing on both new and revamped hot rolling mills such as: • Conventional hot strip mills • Compact mills based on thin slab in line production, CSP • Steckel mills • Plate mills • Ultra thin strip mills
The latest drive system with DTC, keeps your mill rolling with great precision and high productivity. The reliability of hardware and software components and comprehensive diagnostic tools reduce the commissioning and maintenance activities, thereby minimizing down-time.
Installations ABB has installed more than 100 hot flat mill systems worldwide. In recent years, we have supplied electrical equipment and control and drive systems to a number of hot flat mills in, for example, Sweden, Finland, Ukraine, U.K., China, Thailand and Korea.
With its expertise as an electrical and control equipment supplier backed by the in-depth experience of a specialized team for hot rolling mills, ABB undertakes engineering and commissioning activities in both new and revamping projects. Several rolling mill schemes are covered, including continuous, semi-continuous, CSP and endless rolling. In addition, thanks to its knowhow in the areas of technological functions and process modeling, ABB can guarantee high-quality performance in terms of thickness, width, flatness and temperature in combination with optimum productivity.
ABB delivered its first electrical drive for a bar mill in Sweden more than a century ago. Since then all of our technical achievements and experience accumulated in the intervening years have been incorporated into our latest digitally controlled rod and bar mills.
Main characteristics: • Plate width: 4,200 mm • Plate thickness: 6 – 100 mm • Plate weight: Max 35 tons
ABB’s scope of supply: • Roughing mill: 2 x 5,000 kW main drives and motors in twin drive arrangement • Finishing mill: 2 x 7,500 kW main drives and motors in twin drive arrangement • Edger: 2 x 750 kW motors in twin drive arrangement • Automation
Installations ABB has supplied more than 400 wire rod and section mill installations worldwide. In recent years we have commissioned electrical equipment and control
and drive systems in a number of greenfield section mills as well as revamped profile mills in, for example, Spain, Luxembourg, Sweden, China and Korea.
Our profile mills cover the following: • Rod mills • Bar mills • Rod and bar mills • Light and medium section mills • Heavy section mills Always in the forefront of technical developments, ABB has been continuously investing in R&D to meet process demands and thereby maintain its leadership in profile mill control.
Xiangtan Plate Mill, P.R. China is a typical example.

Hot Flat Rolling Mill Solutions
IDC, Interstand Dimension Control, has been developed for rod and bar mills to achieve tighter tolerances head to tail, improve product quality, yield and availability, ensure fast product and dimension changes and obtain early indication of abnormal mill conditions, more consistent mill set-up and improved pass schedules. It serves as an operator tool to facilitate understanding of the rolling process.
Based on more than 100 years of industrial process know-how and combined with the latest technology in mathematical simulation, ABB has developed a powerful service – Drive Dynamics Analysis, DDA, to ensure better mechanical and electrical performance of drives in the tough rolling mill environment.
We are committed to improving your quality and productivity
Medium Section Mill, ProfilARBED, Luxembourg is one example of a greenfield project. Main characteristics: • IPE beams: 120 • HE sections: 100 • UPE channels: 140 • Angels: 100

ABB’s scope of supply: Complete electrical and control equipment including: • Power supply with transformer and medium- and low voltage switchgear • Drive systems for both the main and the auxiliary drives • Automation An interesting feature of this delivery is that ABB supplied complete electrical rooms in the form of containers, housing all the electrical equipment, including the ventilation systems and fire protection.
The DDA Service package helps mill owners identify the causes of poor dynamic performance of their drive trains and determine correct parameters for optimum drive performance, thereby giving a better solution to optimize the performance of their drive systems and to improve productivity and quality.
References Around 100 drive trains for various applications have been analyzed using DDA. One of them was the application of DDA to a crop shear drive at a rolling mill in the U.S. to investigate the cause of a major coupling failure of the shear. The result showed the problem was caused by a
low design cutting torque and large torsion overshoot. A new mechanical design was recommended to the customer.
Worldwide service ABB’s worldwide service covers both global and local organizations. No matter where your mill is, ABB is always close to you.
