Modern information systems and communication technologies allow remote access with just a few clicks.
Maintenance work from ARMOR on a customer plant.
The benefits from using such capabilities in the process automation domain include better integration across different business functions and higher utilization of experts. However, the threat of unauthorized parties gaining access to sensitive and confidential information or critical system functionality remains a challenge. ABB provides solutions that ensure systems continuously meet the latest cyber security standards. With the ABB Remote Monitoring and Operation Room (ARMOR), plant operators can get access to remote operations support in a secure and efficient way, allowing less time for worry and more time to focus on productivity. ARMOR - a secure environment The security level for any service infrastructure is influenced by three main factors. First, the people that work remotely. ABB ensures that all staff working within the ARMOR environment have received specific training and kept their training record up-to-date. Second, processes governing how the people work. ABB has defined strict policies and procedures which are enforced for all ARMOR work. Third, the technology which is used in the service infrastructure. ABB has deployed security architecture within the ARMOR environment and it has been audited by external experts and is continuously maintained and improved to address changes in the threat environment.
Ultimately, the goal is to ensure the continuous and efficient operation of the production, even when exposed to cyber security threats. Perimeter protection, account management, access control, malware protection, and patch management and much more are essential parts of protection against such threats. Many of these solutions are offered as cyber security implementation services and follow security standards and regulations for the process automation domain. The ARMOR infrastructure is built-up to support both standard and customized implementation services. Architecture Remote access to on-site systems is realized through a multi-tier architecture. The first tier consists of the ARMOR itself. Access to ARMOR is only possible with a PIN-protected magnetic swipe card, issued after the assigned employee has completed special training. The computers used in ARMOR are dedicated solely to remote work. The second tier is the use of ABB’s remote technology solution, Remote Access Platform (RAP), which is designed to support complex, critical systems. With the RAP solution, it is possible for ABB experts to obtain secure remote access to equipment at customer sites, any time of the day. The RAP solution enables remote desktop sharing, remote web browsing and two-way file transfer. It also keeps track of all user activity and creates audit trails.

Besides technical security measures, operational procedures that ensure continuous security management and secure operations must also be in place. This is also incorporated into the ARMOR service delivery package. Such procedures include user account management to ensure that only authorized users can access the ARMOR and the customer systems as well as making sure that these users have received the appropriate training and patch management to ensure that the software used throughout the solution is up-to-date with regards to security updates.
