PRAY FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA AND HIS ADMINISTRATION President Obama is prepared to authorize airstrikes within Syria, taking the military campaign against ISIS across the border into new and unpredictable terrain, seeking to disrupt or dismantle their safe haven and center of operations. Secretary of State John Kerry in Baghdad felt “encouraged” after talks with the new government there, as he attempted to forge a coalition of nations in the region in order to expand operations against ISIS. Pray that President Obama and his advisers would seek wisdom from the Lord concerning Middle East actions.
PRAY FOR OUR CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) has invited the Ukrainian President to address a joint meeting of Congress next week. Members of both parties had encouraged Boehner to bestow the honor, so they could show support for Ukraine. Representatives Michele Bachmann (Minnesota) and Ted Poe (Texas) introduced bills that would allow the U.S. to revoke passports of Americans involved with terrorist groups like ISIS. Pray about the actions of Congress as it relates to Islamist terrorism and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
PRAY FOR OUR JUDICIARY The Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals set September 25 to hear arguments about changes to the voting laws in North Carolina that would limit early voting and block same-day registration. The federal District of Columbia Circuit agreed to hear a case charging that the federal government lacks the authority to provide consumers tax credits in health insurance exchanges not run by states. Pray for the judges in the appeals courts as they deliberate over arguments concerning voting and ObamaCare.

OTHER PRAYER CONCERNS: WARS AND TERRORISM The Iraqi government put in place an important building block of an anti-ISIS strategy when Parliament approved, in record time, a new power-sharing government to manage sectarian divides in that fractured country. Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah isn’t waiting for election audit results to declare himself the victor, throwing into doubt the country’s first peaceful transfer of power. Pray for the new governments of Iraq and Afghanistan to be able to establish peaceful conditions in their nations.
FOREIGN INTERESTS AND CONFLICTS Top U.S. and China officials disagreed this week over what the U.S. said was China’s intercept of a U.S. Navy patrol plane with China calling on the U.S. to reduce and ultimately cease reconnaissance activity in the area. The head of the United Nations’ Human Rights Office said the world’s number one priority should be bringing an urgent end to the gruesome religious and ethnic conflicts in Iraq and Syria at the hands of ISIS. Pray about America’s role as the leader of the free world and whether it is in decline.
THE ECONOMY U.S. wholesale inventories posted the smallest gain in a year during July, suggesting a slower pace of stock accumulation at the beginning of the third quarter that could prompt economists to trim their growth estimates. The top executive for H&R Block (tax preparers) said he expected President Obama’s health care law to add significant complexity to next year’s tax season based on draft forms the IRS recently released. Pray about the many things that cause delay in America’s economic recovery and return to prosperity.
ISRAEL AND THE MIDDLE EAST Congress has been urged to increase oversight into aid channeled to the Palestinian enclave’s Hamas rulers and also to focus on other Haams-funding channels such as Turkey and Qatar and their strong support for Hamas in Gaza. Israel has supplied the U.S. with intelligence and satellite images on ISIS positions as well as information on Westerners joining its ranks, to assist Washington in its ongoing operations against the Islamic State. Pray about the aid going to the Palestinians in Gaza, and also about U.S.-Israel relations.
HEALTH CARE Public approval of ObamaCare continued to sink this summer, issuing the latest warning for vulnerable candidates who backed the law who will face voters this November. Just 35 percent of voters now support the Affordable Care Act. The Federal Trade Commission has dismissed fat-burning claims of green coffee extract, saying Applied Food Sciences have failed to demonstrate its effectiveness, and settling the matter for $3.5 million. Pray about the impact of ObamaCare on the coming 2014 mid-term elections. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:5-6
