Dance Team Tryout Packet

Where: Intramural Building (The Barn) When: Saturday May 13th 8:00am and Sunday May 14th 8:00am Cost: $25 (Only $20 if you preregister by Friday May 7th) All tryout sessions are closed to the public. Only athletes and selection committee members may be present.

It is important that you read and fully understand the enclosed information. Give serious thought to the level of commitment you must take if you are chosen to be a part of this program. South Dakota State University Dance Team Mission Statement The purpose of the SDSU Dance Team is to inspire school spirit and cheer on our SDSU Jackrabbits at football and basketball games. We strive for each one of us to better ourselves technically as dancers, academically as students, and personally as individuals. We also motivate and push our teammates to become stronger dancers by competing against other college dance teams to represent SDSU at the National level. 2017-2018 Dance Team The SDSU Dance Team is comprised of 20-30 of the most elite dancers in the state. The dance team performs at all home football and basketball games. Selected dancers will compete at NDA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida. Season Practices Weekly Practices: The teams will practice three times a week. These days will be announced at a later date. All practices will be after 5 PM, with two early morning workout a week. **Classes must be scheduled around practices, workouts, fundraisers, appearances, philanthropies and games** 2017 Summer Commitments There will be a few summer commitments. One weekend (Friday-Sunday) will be scheduled for practice during the months of June and July. A workshop will take place July 28th & 29th. NDA Summer Collegiate Camp is July 30th – August 1st and is 100% required for all squad members. Special Events/Appearances You will be required to attend additional athletic department appearances. When preparing for competitions, there may be additional mandatory practices. Our activities do not necessarily stop during the holiday season or spring break.

Expenses Team members will be required to raise the cost of their equipment throughout the season. Fundraising events will be scheduled in order to raise these funds. Each team member will be responsible for the remaining balance of equipment costs not raised. Camp, choreography and national/local competition expenses will also be at the responsibility of the dancers. Scholarships South Dakota State University does not currently award scholarships for spirit squad members. Eligibility Spring tryouts are open to individuals who have been accepted by or full-time students of South Dakota State University for the Fall 2017 term. All participants, including transfer students and current team members, must have a minimum of 2.0 grade point average and have graduated from high school. Incoming students must bring a copy of their letter of acceptance on the first day of tryouts. Current SDSU students must bring an unofficial transcript. Tryout Application and Process Throughout the process of tryouts you will be observed by the SDSU coaching staff, as well as a selection committee. At the final tryout you will be asked to perform specific skills; however, there is not a point system. The final decisions will be made by the coaching staff and a highly qualified tryout selection committee. Attire Tryout Clinic (April 29th)  Proper dance shoes  Black, plain spandex shorts  Either an SDSU or plain colored, non-printed t-shirt Final Tryout (May 13th & 14th)  Proper dance shoes  Black, plain spandex shorts  Black, plain sports bra  Tights ** Hair and make-up are to be performance/competition ready. No jewelry is acceptable and deduction will be applied if worn.

Tryout Material You will be asked to execute the skills listed below for tryouts. We are not necessarily looking for perfection at this time, but we do want you to concentrate and perfect the skills that play to your strengths. In addition to the skills listed, you will be observed throughout the clinic on your attitude, coachability, enthusiasm, and overall performance. We will be looking for current and potential skills to become a collegiate dancer. One dance will be taught to all participants. The dance will be approximately 30 seconds in length and will include various skills including (but not limited to): triple/quad pirouette, fouettes a la seconde, calypso, disk, leg hold turn, and other skills.

South Dakota State University Dance Team Rules and Regulations Contract As a dancer for SDSU you will be expected to cheer/perform at all assigned appearances, football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball games. Members are required to attend a variety of athletic department and fundraising events throughout the season. Spirit Squad members commit 15+ hours a week to practices, games, fundraisers and events. This can vary throughout the season. Please consider your time commitment before trying out. As an SDSU spirit squad member, the following will also be expected of you: -

Maintain good academic standing with the university throughout the season. Schedule classes and work around practices, games, performances and fundraisers. Maintain good conduct at all times. This incudes removing anything which could be deemed inappropriate (i.e. smoking, drinking, attire, poses) from all media sources, including but not limited to, social networking sites. Remember that you are representing South Dakota State University at all times and that Spirit Squad members are some of the most recognized faces on campus. Attend and be on time for all practices. Attend and be on time for all weight training sessions with the team. Attend and be on time for all assigned games. Attend and be on time for all fundraisers. No use of tobacco or alcohol at SDSU functions. Absolutely no illegal drugs will be tolerated. Not to wear university owned equipment outside of practices, performances, or games. Return university owned equipment cleaned and without damage or pay for any damage deemed necessary. Relationships with players of the sports you cheer for are prohibited. If a relationship already exists prior to trying out for the team, the coaches must be notified or is grounds for dismissal. Report all conflicts immediately. Excused absences will only be granted when submitted via email to the coaches. Unexcused absences will result in suspension. Reimbursing the University for payment made on your behalf if you leave the team or are dismissed. Appropriate tattoos already present prior to tryouts are allowed. Once selected for the team, any new tattoos may not show outside the cheer uniform for either males or females. Practice good hygiene. This includes yourself as well as clothing. Parents are not allowed to contact coach unless of an emergency.

Discipline: Disciplinary actions will be handled on a per case basis by the coaching staff and will take into account the severity of the offense as well as the history of the team member. Discipline may include but is not limited to probation, suspension, or dismissal from the team. By signing this contract I certify that I read and agree to all of the rules and regulations contained above. Any questions or concerns I had regarding the team policies have been addressed and explained prior to me signing this contract. In return, I may expect the coaching staff of South Dakota State University to keep my safety a priority and to make decisions, which will be in the best interest of the team and program.
