Welcome to this quick guide to the most common questions I get on a daily basis about heel pain. Heel pain related issues make up the vast majority of my clients with walking and movement problems. We’ve been successfully treating heel pain for many years and use evidence based theories to do so (basically the boffins have proved that we are doing it the right way). There are 2 main conditions that cause heel pain. They are: Plantar Fasciitis
Heel Spurs
One last thing before we get started. If you, or someone you know, have heel pain related issues then why don’t you contact me and arrange a free consultation to assess how we can stop your pain. You might. Heel spurs that produce pain are not actually that common. It is more likely that you have a condition called Plantar Fasciitis (you can read an in-depth article on Plantar Fasciitis by clicking here). Heel spurs are a small but pointy bone growth that ‘digs’ in to the soft tissue structures near it when you stand and walk. However, many many people have these (as can be seen on x-rays) but never get pain Plantar Fasciitis is a mechanical condition caused by your walking style (created by your build – your anatomy) putting pressure on a ligament type structure in your heel area that becomes painful over time
Cure is the wrong way to describe the result I get for my clients. We ‘FIX’ your pain by changing your foot and ankle position with our unique orthotics design but if you don’t wear them or stop wearing them then the pain in your heel will come back. That is why we say that our treatment is a fix. Think about it like having to wear contact lenses for bad eyesight. The contact lenses do not actually cure your eyesight but the fix the alignment issues to ‘fix’ your eyesight. That’s exactly what we do with heel pain – we fix the alignment issues that cause the pain hence the pain goes away.
The sore structure is effectively a string of gristle. When you sleep (or rest) it shortens back to its shortest length. When you stand up it is forced aggressively to stretch meaning that you are irritating the damaged area. When we correct your foot positioning this pain will go away because we are fixing the damage so stretching it in the morning or when you stand up will not hurt anymore.
Not really. What it does is stretch the plantar fascia at night meaning that your ‘less tight’ in the morning so the heel pain might not be as bad but it will never fix the pain issues. This is because you still have to walk which creates the damage to the plantar fascia.
No. It ‘might’ kill the pain for a period of time (commonly 3 months or so) but that is all. The major downside is that it is a steroid analgesic and if used more than a couple of times it can have damaging effects on the structures of the heel. The other issue is that it is a very difficult (and painful) injection to get right and you might not see any results at all. I recommend not having more than 2 of these injections and the fewer the better, and remember, it just ‘masks’ the pain for a few weeks and it will come back.
Many of my clients have. Many had little or no results from various ‘professionals’ that tried insoles (but were charged custom orthotics prices). Keep in mind that I am an Orthotist that specialises in foot and ankle biomechanics. It is all I do. Hence why I’m known as ‘The Foot Expert’. I have loads of articles that cover this important topic on my website – thefootexpert.ie
This is a difficult question to answer accurately as it depends on the extent of the damage you have caused up until the time you start wearing your orthotics and, of course, making sure you wear them as much as possible. What I can say is that some of my clients have experienced rapid pain relief and some have taken a couple of months to get to that point. Any other health care professional that makes a promise of immediate pain relief is simply lying as it cannot be accurately predicted.
