Law 13 - Defin it io n of Free Kicks Direct and indirect free kicks are awarded to the opposing team of a player guilty of an offence or infringement. All free kicks are taken from the place where the infringement occurred, with some notable exceptions….

There Are Only Two Types of Free Kicks

DFK (Direct Free Kick) “One Touch” IFK (Indirect Free Kick) “Second Touch Required”

The Penalty Kick (Law 14) A Penalty Kick is awarded when a defender commits any of the 11 Primary DFK fouls inside their own penalty area while ball is in play

A DFK (or PK) is also awarded if the ball is in play, on the field of play when… • a player commits a DFK infraction on the field against • a team-mate • a substitute • a substituted player • a team official (either team)



• a match official (referee) a substitute or team official commits a DFK infraction against a match official (referee) on the field.



a substitute or team official touches the ball on the field.



a player commits a DFK infraction off the field

8U Passers – NO PENALTY KICKS!!! In 8U Passers: 1. All Restarts are INDIRECT FREE KICKS (IFKs) 2. NO PENALTY KICKS ARE AWARDED

While 8U fields have a Penalty Area drawn on them, Penalty Kicks are NOT enforced.

Free Kick Procedure s - Review • Ball placed at point of infraction (4 exceptions)

• Ball must be stationary • No encroachment by opponents • DFK & IFK - ball may be kicked in any direction • Penalty Kick – ball must be kicked forward • Ball is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves (and leaves

penalty area into the field-of-play, if appropriate)

• No “double touch” by kicker • Cannot score directly (first touch) against self

Ball In Play – Goal Scored Ball is “in-play” when: 1. Kicked and clearly moves

AND

2. Leaves Penalty Area (if appropriate)

Goal can be scored when: 1. Ball is “in-play”

AND

2. Ball is kicked into opponents’ goal

AND

3. On IFK only - if ball is touched by 2nd player
