Seven budding journalists now part of Buckler's Mead Academy 'News Club' to get hundreds of success stories out of their inspirational Academy and to the community The team of enthusiastic students aim to share stories from their inspirational academy with the community. Year 9 students Enya Lackie and Christina Lane are joined by Matt Sullivan, Marnie Athersuch, Finn Emmenton, Georgina Rockett and Academy Photographer Tom Kajdana. The students plan will involve teams of journalists across the four houses gathering new stories for local media outlets and the Academy newsletter to go home to parents. Headteacher Mrs Gorrod said "These students have tremendous enthusiasm and are already at work finding good news stories from across the academy."

Buckler’s Mead Academy students get help to ‘change their brains’ from visiting fiction and self-help writer Buckler’s Mead Academy Year 9 students were treated to a visit from thoughtprovoking fiction and adolescent self-help writer Nicola Morgan. The famous author began the assembly by telling the year group she was going to change their brains, which the students soon found out was no lie! Nicola explained in a very factual yet comprehensible manner about the causes and effects of stress on the mind and body, and the students can now use a host of useful tips in this year’s exams. Each of the students were given little black stickers called ‘stress dots’ which changed colour according to the students’ skin temperature in order to give an idea of their stress levels. One student Marnie Athersuch said “This was a brilliant assembly. I will definitely be buying one of Nicola’s books!” Nicola’s books are available to borrow from the school’s innovative study centre and more tips can be seen on her Story by our Student News Team website www.nicolamorgan.com

24 Year 10 students embark on a “scholar’s programme” run by the Brilliant Club The aims of the programme are to inspire youngsters to aim higher and start thinking about university now rather than when they begin their A levels. Students will be completing a research project with the support of a PhD student who has weekly tutorials with them. The project is called “The Science of Wellbeing” and students are completing experiments to find out what makes people happy! The programme launch day was held in Keble College, Oxford University – a beautiful building which was truly awe-inspiring for some of the students. They were given a tour by an undergraduate student, including seeing student accommodation and eating in the dining hall. It was a busy but wonderful day and a terrific start to what we hope will be a really useful insight into university life and work. Mrs Fields

Students and teachers showed up in support of Help for Heroes on Wednesday 2nd March for the Insanity Fitness Event. With everyone paying a pound to enter, we spoke to one student and they said that the workout was "epic." Mrs Cohen, Mrs Mead and Mr Smith took part as well in the amazing event. The organisers of the event, Sam Pollard, Declan Gavin and Hugo Goncalves took part in the fun but challenging workout. Overall the Insanity event raised over £70. Many congratulations to Sam, Declan and Hugo Story by our Student News Team for organising the event for such a great cause.

Flying Start Challenge 2016 The Flight Club has had a busy year so far with some great lectures, talks and activities supplied by the Stem Ambassadors from Agustawestland. Five graduate engineers come every Thursday to talk about flight and job opportunities in the aircraft industry and associated companies.

Luckily the Glider held out, getting best distance with one of our other gliders coming third. We made the Finals at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in March. The Westlands committee were so impressed they asked for a demonstration for the Commodore of the air station. We duly obliged and unfortunately in one flight Kieran`s glider broke up in mid air. A legacy of the morning crash! We rebuilt the glider and set off for the finals. A busy and interesting day was had by all with lectures, workshops and our team making a presentation to the judges. Smashy Smashy Eggman did well in the first workshop but not so well in the other parts of the competition. Unfortunately the glider throw was not up to the distance in rehearsals and so our team ended the competition in the pack.

The Westland engineers devised various tests that the students could do to help them understand the theory of flight. Having a wind tunnel is a new dimension to the club. The engineers all have different specialities from Gearbox Design Engineer, Pilot and Flight Controls Engineer, Avionics and Electrical Engineer, and Production engineer. All the talks were well thought out and delivered at a suitable pace. I would personally like to thank all the students who took part in the Challenge and the Teams that The Teams spent hours and hours working on their designs went to Yeovilton. Kieran Dicker, Adam before testing of prototypes and final designs. Brown, Chris Lintern, Jacob Davis, Sam Crossland, Declan Gavin and Liam We went to the Regional Heat in the beginning of February Parry. All the students were a credit to with a modified design from our last year’s winning glider, the Academy at the Competitions. and in testing it was as good as the previous year. Unfortunately a serious accident on the morning of the Flight Club will continue with our Glider, Regionals left the Glider in pieces with a wing snapped in Helicopter and radio Control Plane half. In a very busy hour we glued it all back together, using a flying through the summer term. hairdryer to speed up the process.

Students have splashing time! On the 27th of February 2016, Buckler’s Mead Academy year 7 students went to Splashdown on a reward trip.

Buckler’s Mead Academy celebrates World Book Day by hosting two fun competitions and holding a sale of books, DVDs and CD Audio Books Students participated in our ‘Hunt for the Golden Ticket’ competition in the Study Centre by following clues, answering questions and collecting ‘Golden Tickets’. All of the Golden Tickets were then entered into a Grand Prize Draw and the winner was Year 8 student Kenneth Seterra. The second competition entitled ‘Guess Who?’ was a big hit with many students. There was a Power Point presentation running throughout the day on the Academy public screens showing 9 celebrities with their faces hidden behind books. Students then guessed who they were and received a sweet treat for all nine correct answers. The sale of Books, DVDs and CD Audio Books will continue until the end of term. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of Mrs Brown new books available to borrow from the Study Centre.

taking lots of photographs. The students were asked to focus on capturing images which emphasised the layers, patterns and textures of the coastal landscape. They spent the first hour working on a near deserted beach and many worked together to create huge group paintings of the waves lapping onto the shore. After picnicking on the pier they explored the working harbour with the lobster pots, boats and some carefully hidden crates of live crabs caught that morning. Whilst art students drew from direct observation, the photographers enjoyed capturing the visually rich environment and exploring the more unused settings on their cameras.

No trip to the seaside would be complete without an ice cream and year 10 enjoyed maintaining that tradition, as well as making friends with the local ice cream seller who had worked from the same sea front chalet for 47 years! The staff and students of the Art department would also like to take this opportunity to wish Mrs Garth the very best as she prepares to embark on her next adventure, teaching full time at her new school after Easter. Mrs Garth has worked at Buckler’s for nine years and will be very missed by teachers and students. Mrs Williams

Students at Buckler’s Mead Academy have been selected to become published poets after winning a National competition The ‘Poetry Trials’ competition was aimed at schools and academies across the country and Buckler’s Mead produced fifty three of the best poems in the South West. Teacher Miss Wadham, who co-ordinated the competition, explained, “I’m delighted at the success of our young writers in our Academy. Last month, we heard that forty five pupils would have sagas officially published and now we have repeated our success. This proves, that along with exceptional early entry English results, our Academy produces outstanding writers.” The final anthology of work, ‘The Poetry Trials- Southern Voices’, will be sent to the British Library and the Academy and can also be ordered from www.youngwriters.co.uk at the end of May.

Inspirational Callum Morrison visited the year 10 students to represent The Arthrogryposis Group and receive a cheque of £606.59 donated by the academy . Before receiving the cheque on behalf of the group, Callum, aged 18, told us about his early life and how he has achieved 5 GCSEs from A*-C .

help him to start speaking. He has had many struggles in life as he could not do things as a child such as climbing trees and running around. This is a great success from someone who has had so much struggle in his life and many people would be surprised how hard his life really is.

Callum had a difficult early life as he was born with his feet towards his head and he also had to be tube fed. He nearly died 3 times because of his complications. He couldn't speak until he was 4 or 5 and learnt sign language so he could talk to his parents, however when he was 5 he was given speech therapy to

Callum is going to be having another operation soon so we wish him the best and he is very grateful for the donations that are being made to help him. Story by our Student News Team

Mr Lawrence

Apprenticeship My name is Anthony and I would like to tell you about the last two years of my Apprenticeship at Buckler’s Mead Academy. From leaving College, it was a great step forward because it gave me the chance to carry on learning, but in a working environment. I have also learned good life skills, made new friends and become confident in myself, as well as gaining more qualifications with the back-up of the College. I have learned to take on new responsibilities, and work as a team as well as joining in with outside activities by playing football with colleagues. All of this has taken me forward into work, as I have been fortunate to have been offered a full time position at the Academy, the first step in my career in I.T. I would recommend anyone to take up an Apprenticeship, it is fun, exciting and a great first step into your working life, giving you all the valuable skills Mr Collins you need.
