1.Ask one person from the group to read the following from John Piper, “The presence of hope in the invincible sovereignty of God drives out fear.” Discuss the word “invincible” in the context of these words; take turns sharing how this declaration of invincibility bolsters your hope in the Living God.
GROW 1.As a group read 1 Peter 1:35; consider the elements of the Christian experience from these verses: a.New Birth: Who is the source of new birth? Through what means? Is there a qualifier as to the availability of this gift towards anyone? How about anyone’s past? Discuss if you hold others to a different standard. If so, does this prevent you from getting into the messiness of life with others? b. Living Hope: Peter says this hope comes through the power of the resurrection. Discuss as a group the confidence, joy, and peace made available to us in this living hope. How often do you think about that hope? Discuss your experiences with the marginalized as they are introduced and experience this living hope. c. Inheritance: Peter describes this inheritance as imperishable, uncorrupted, and unfading. Which of these attributes is most meaningful to you? Why? d.Protection: Peter writes the source of this power is from God Himself. Declare God’s power through His actions in Scripture……He parted a sea people!! What else? After this discussion, how secure do you feel in the Power of the Almighty? 2. G iven this new birth, a living hope, and an inheritance that is protected by the Lord Himself….what is our responsibility as it relates to those marginalized in our society? As a group read Ezekiel 22:2329. T he prophet indicts the people outlining their waywardness; in verse 29, the people are condemned for extorting and robbing, oppressing the poor and needy, and unlawfully exploiting the foreign resident (refugee). In what forms do these same things happen today? This might hurt if we are honest….dig into this one! Think laws, housing policies, incarceration, etc. In what “real” ways can a Christ follower build a relationship into the lives of those on the outside? Hint: it might not be working once a year at the Gospel Mission on Thanksgiving morning.
REACH Discuss if you’re better at “saying” than doing or if you prefer “safety and comfort” verses the messiness of the suffering. If so, why do you think this is true of you? Are you growing in these areas, if so, share and encourage others? Take time to pray and seek how you might begin the journey of doing life with others and introducing them to the Living Hope through your genuine love and care.
