The Back Page I don't remember the man. I honestly never even heard of him until I read a story about him. He was a radio host/songwriter in the 1950's. His name was Stuart Hamblim. His big hit in the 1950's was, "I wont go hunting with you Jake, but I'll go chasing women". I never heard the song before in my life and I am not sure that I want to but according to the story I read, the song described Stuart to a tee. He loved to drink, loved to party and loved to chase women, and he did all this to the extreme in the midst of his elite Hollywood friends. They loved him for it. So that was Stuart’s life. He seemed to have it all—money, fame fortune and plenty of willing women. That is how he lived his life until the day a young preacher came to town. This preacher was holding revival meetings in a tent near Stuart’s home and was causing quit a ruckus in town. Stuart decided to have this young preacher as a guest on his radio show so he could have some fun with him. In order to gather more information for his show Stuart even showed up at the preacher’s revival meetings so he could continue to slam him on his show. Now, this preacher was no fool. He knew why Stuart was there and early in one of his services the preacher boldly announced to the stunned crowed, "There is one man in the audience who is a big fake!.” Many in the crowd thought the preacher was referring to them but Stuart was convinced the young preacher was directing his words to him. The preacher’s words seemed to haunt Stuart. A couple of nights later he showed up at the preacher’s hotel room in a drunken rage and demanded that the preacher pray for him. The preacher refused!, "This is between you and God and I am not going to get in the middle of it", said the preacher. The preacher did however invite Stuart into his hotel room and the two had a heartwarming talk until 5 in the morning. Then something shocking happened! Stuart started to change his life. He quit drinking, quit partying, and yes, he even quit chasing women. He quit everything that he once thought was fun and because of this he quickly fell out of favor with his Hollywood friends. Stuart was fired from his popular radio show after he refused a beer company as one its sponsors. He was in a rut. He tried writing songs but had very little success. As his life continued to spiral downward his longtime friend named John visited him so they could talk. "All your troubles started with religion. Was it all worth it?” lamented John "Yes,” replied Stuart. "You liked your booze so much. Don't you miss it?” asked John "No!" said Stuart "I just don't understand how you could give it all up so easily,” said John Stuart replied, “Its no big secret. All things are possible with God.” "That's a catchy phrase, you should write a song about it!" The rest is history! The song Stuart wrote was It Is No Secret. We all know that song don't we? We all have sung it many times in church together. "It is no secret what God can do. What he’s done for others he’ll do for you.” But that's not the end to the story. Stuart’s friend John’s last name was Wayne and that young preacher who refused to pray for Stuart, his name is Billy Graham! Sometime when reading the bible it is hard to think of God doing miracles in our lifetime. It’s so easy to think of God as someone from the past and then try at apply it to our lives from that perspective, but there are millions of unwritten stories out there just like Stuart’s and they are happening right now! Maybe some of you even have your own story that has yet to be told (I’d love to hear them!!). Our God is an awesome God and his business is this----TO CHANGE LIVES. God has never stop changing the lives of his children since the Garden and he will never stop until the end of time! Changed lives! Miracles! Divine intervention! They are all alive and well and they are all around us!
