PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Phil Taylor, Shorter

Taylor had a historic week for the Hawks and the GSC, breaking the conference’s single game scoring record with a 62-point performance in a win over Carver Bible College. Taylor went 19-for-34 from the floor, 9-for-15 from beyond the arc, and 15for-19 at the free throw line in the game. He also grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists, and, despite playing 39 minutes, had no turnovers. Miller becomes the second Buccaneer win freshman of the week honors in 2016-17, and he earns the distinction following a pair of CBU victories. In the first conference game of the season for Christian Brothers, Miller led the way, scoring a game-high 23 points off the bench in a win over Union. Miller went 8-for-9 in the game, including a 7-for-8 showing from three-point range. On the week, Miller averaged 16.5 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, and 1.0 assist per game. In 57 minutes on the floor, Miller did not commit a single turnover.

GSC Men’s Basketball Weekly Release

AROUND THE GSC Just one week away from the Gulf South Conference schedule heading into league play, every team in the conference sits at or above .500. It has been a dominant showing for the league in non-conference play, winning 78.3% of its game and racking up a record of 47-13. West Florida is the only team in the league who remains unbeaten. The first night with six conference games will be Thursday, December 15. After breaking the GSC single game scoring record with his 62-point performance against Carver, Shorter’s Phil Taylor was named the USBWA National Player of the Week. In the Hawks’ other game that week, Taylor had 32 points, bringing his average for the week to 47.0 points per game. Delta State’s Devin Schmidt surpassed 2,000 career points this week, scoring 28 points in a win over Central Baptist College. Schmidt is now just the sixth person in GSC history to record at least 2,000 careers points. He is second in the league in scoring at 25.5 points per game. With an 83-65 victory over Selma, Mississippi College’s Don Lofton now has 200 wins in his coaching career. Lofton’s first win came back in 2002, while his 100th career win was in 2009.
