DEFENCE AND CYBER SECURITY The Ministry of Defence (MOD) supports over 30,000 jobs in the South West, spending £4 billion across several sectors, including aerospace and marine industries. The MOD Defence & Equipment Support organisation in Bristol controls a £25 billion global budget. Cyber security is also one of the key considerations for aerospace companies and the South West has significant capability in this vital field, particularly focussed around Gloucestershire’s Government Communications Headquarters.

Many of the South West Aerospace Cluster’s leading aerospace companies operate in the defence and cyber industries, including Airbus, BAE Systems, Boeing, Cobham, GE Aviation Systems, GKN Aerospace, Leonardo Helicopters, Rolls Royce and Thales. Babcock delivers critical and vital aviation services in 14 countries across the world. With major sites in Bristol and Plymouth, Babcock International provides fixed and rotary wing technical training for the UK Air Force, Navy and Army, equipment support, airbase management, and operates aircraft fleets across the globe.

CHEMRING COUNTERMEASURES

Offers comprehensive threat weapon systems and missile countermeasure solutions to the MOD. The manufacturing site in Wiltshire houses extensive IR decoy manufacturing, RF decoy manufacturing facilities and a Technology Centre. Chemring Technology Solutions in Dorset is a global provider of advanced Electronic Warfare, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, and Communication Information Systems products, which deliver leading edge technology to mitigate current and emerging threats.

GENERAL DYNAMICS UK

A leading prime contractor and complex systems integrator working in partnership with the UK MOD. Its facility in Chippenham is part of the company’s Mission Systems business which focuses on avionics integration, situational awareness, Apache Bowman connectivity and ISTAR/ C4I systems.

L-3 TRL TECHNOLOGY

Based in Gloucestershire, L-3 TRL Technology provide advanced electronic systems for the protection of people, infrastructure and assets in the fields of electronic warfare and cyber security.

LOCKHEED MARTIN

Principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. It has 5 sites in the South West with its Mission and Fire Control division in Bristol, Mission Systems and Training at Yeovil, Warminster and RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall, as well as its Space Systems business in Plymouth.

MBDA

A global guided weapons system prime contractor for a series of multi-national programmes, including the 6-nation Meteor air superiority weapon, the FrancoBritish conventionally armed cruise missile and a family of air defence systems based on the Aster missile. Its Bristol facility focuses on software and hardware development and has a particular expertise in mission planning and navigation systems.

NORTHROP GRUMMAN

A leading global security company serving the aerospace, electronics, information systems and technical services sectors. In the UK, it is a key supplier in the defence, security, IT and public safety domains and it has leading capabilities in unmanned systems, cyber security, C4ISR and logistics. At its Cheltenham site, it established a cyber centre focused on data security and information assurance.

QINETIQ

The UK’s largest research and technology organisation. It provides innovative solutions for aerospace, defence and security through the utilisation of its extensive technology knowledge and intellectual property. QinetiQ has a presence throughout the South West. It operates the UK’s second longest landing strip at MOD Boscombe Down in Wiltshire. Here it provides the UK MOD with innovative and realistic test evaluation of military and civilian platforms, weapons and components.

RAYTHEON

Founded in 1922, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration, capabilities in C5I (command, control, communications, computing, cyber and intelligence), sensing, effects and mission support services. The Raytheon Cyber Innovation Centre in Cheltenham operates as a vulnerability research, software development and innovation hub for intelligence and global cyber security.

DEFENCE ACADEMY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

The UK’s Defence Academy, headquartered in Wiltshire, is responsible for post-graduate education and much of command, staff, leadership, defence management, business skills and technical training for the UK Armed Forces and Civil Servants.

DEFENCE SCHOOL OF ELECTRONIC AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Part of the Defence College of Technical Training, it is located at MOD Lyneham in Wiltshire. It delivers technical training to soldiers, Royal Marines, airmen and officers from all three services. The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, an executive agency of the Ministry of Defence based in Wiltshire, ensures that innovative science and technology contribute to the defence and security of the UK.

Based at Blandford, Dorset, it is the leading Information Technology and Communications for the British Army.
