Definition Expedition This activity demonstrates how you can use technology to promote reading at home. It also helps you learn how to use technology to improve vocabulary. Vocabulary refers to the words a reader knows. Reading vocabulary refers to the words a reader knows when seen in print.

Materials:

• E-reader (e.g., Kindle) or other tablets and smartphones with an e-book application • Definition Expedition worksheet (provided)

Preparation:

• Download a short e-book on the digital reader. See provided list for suggested theme-related books. The availability of specific book titles varies depending on the digital reader used. Books can also be downloaded on a smartphone, via an e-book application, if an e-reader is not available. • If you are using an e-reader, set the font to a larger size by default – this is especially important for young readers! • Print copies of the Definition Expedition worksheet.

Activity Instructions: 1. Read the book together and pay attention to the words your child might not know. 2. Find 3-5 words your child didn’t know and use the dictionary feature of the e-reader or the app, help your child look up the definitions.

3. Have your child write the definitions on the worksheet provided.

4. Try to find a way to use the new words in sentences the rest of the week. Challenge your child to use them too and then keep track of who uses them the most!
