TA’RIQ THOMAS ’18 Ta’riq Thomas has already placed himself in the top tier of Delaware Valley University all-time track and field performers. After all, consider what he has accomplished in his first three years:

• 2017 NCAA indoor triple jump national runner-up

• Four-time triple jump All-American (three outdoor, one indoor)

• Six-time all-region honoree (triple jump and long jump)

• Three-time Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) outdoor triple jump champion

• Ten-time MAC first team all-star (triple jump, long jump, high jump)

• 2017 MAC Outdoor Male Field Athlete of the Year

• 2015 MAC Indoor and Outdoor Rookie of the Year

Heading into his senior season, Thomas will have two more chances to add the ultimate feat to his resume, an accomplishment that hasn’t been done in school history in any sport other than wrestling: a national championship. “A national title would mean so much to me, my family and friends who have supported me throughout my life,” Thomas said. “I’ve been working hard and it would be a great feeling to achieve that title.” Thomas came oh so close at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships as his triple jump leap of 48 feet, 1.75 inches trailed only Jared Lewis of Stockton University (49-4.5). He followed it up in the spring with a third straight MAC outdoor title and a return trip to the NCAAs where he placed sixth (47-10) in a highly competitive field. Following a high school career that saw him capture the South Jersey Group 2 long and triple jump championship, Thomas found exactly what he was looking for in a college when he stepped onto the DelVal campus. “After my visit at DelVal in the spring of 2014, my decision to come here was very clear,” Thomas said. “I took a tour of the campus and I saw a similarity to DelVal and my hometown. This made DelVal feel like home to me and that’s exactly what DelVal has been for me these past four years.” Thomas quickly made his mark in track and field as his first indoor season saw him win the conference crown in the triple jump and qualify for the NCAA Championships in both the triple jump and long jump. He then won the MAC outdoor title in the triple and earned All-America honors by placing sixth in the triple jump at nationals. Thomas was injured for most of the 2015-16 indoor season, but came back that spring and defended his MAC championship and moved up three spots on the national podium with a third-place finish. That led to his memorable junior campaign. Thomas loves the competitive nature of collegiate track and field and all the training that goes into become a premier competitor. His training is comprised of plyometric exercises where he works on speed and power, general strength work and the technical aspects of the jumps. “Overall, our training sessions are challenging, but that is what it takes to have an opportunity to compete at the highest level,” Thomas said. “My mindset when I am about to jump is to stay calm and remember to trust my training.” A criminal justice administration major, Thomas plans to pursue a career in that field, possibly as an FBI or CIA agent. Along the way, he wants to continue his training and competing with his ultimate goal of reaching the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. An NCAA championship wouldn’t be a bad way to lead into that!

LACROSSE AND FIELD HOCKEY

“I was nervous about being a dual-sport athlete and majoring in biology but both coaches said that if was too much, they would work with me. So I decided to give it a try and I’m glad I did.”

KARA IMES ’18 Division III athletics allow students to be two-sport athletes and Delaware Valley University coaches highly encourage it. When Kara Imes was getting ready to come to DelVal (which is just 20 minutes from her hometown of Hatfield, Pennsylvania), she was planning on just playing lacrosse and move on from field hockey. However, following a talk with Aggie head field hockey Carol Di Girolamo, Imes decided to give both sports a try. Both programs have benefitted from that decision. Imes has been a three-year starter at midfield for both teams. In field hockey, she has notched eight goals and 18 points while controlling the game’s tempo from her position. She will even serve as a team captain during her 2017 senior campaign. Then there’s lacrosse where Imes has been a member of the team since it began intercollegiate play in 2015. She is the program’s third all-time leading scorer with 72 goals and 85 points and owns the career mark in draw controls with 120. She also has the school’s single-game records for goals (7), points (8) and ground balls (10). Imes was selected by the coaches in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom as a second team all-star as both a freshman and junior. Imes is grateful that she chose to play both sports at DelVal. “I was nervous about being a dual-sport athlete and majoring in biology but both coaches said that if was too much, they would work with me,” Imes said. “So I decided to give it a try and I’m glad I did.” And balancing both sports along with her academics has not been a problem for Imes. In fact, she has excelled academically and has been on the school’s Dean’s List while also earning spots on the MAC fall and spring academic honor rolls in each of the last two years. “I thought it would be tough managing my time with a busy schedule, but I’ve learned not to procrastinate and to stay focused and organized,” Imes said. This summer, Imes got the opportunity to intern at the Last Chance Ranch in Quakertown. It is public volunteer, non-profit organization that rescues and rehabilitates horses and domestic companion animals. Imes has worked on both the kennel and barn side of things and the experience has been extremely rewarding. “This internship has taught me a lot so far and has allowed great hands-on experience and the gaining of knowledge of the animal and what they need,” Imes said. “I’ve learned about vaccinations, medications, neutering and micro-chipping. I’ve even groomed a camel and I bet not many can say they’ve done that.” That experience will certainly be on Imes’ applications for veterinary schools or as she puts it, “four years (of school) down, four more to go!” The goal after that is to eventually open her own veterinary practice. Lofty goals, but we already know that Imes can be an honors student, an all-conference athlete and a camel groomer!
