Season Outlook

Bearcats Optimistic About First BIG EAST Campaign Optimism is the key word for the University of Cincinnati baseball team and its head coach Brian Cleary as the opening of the 2006 season looms on the horizon. Now in its second season in the state-of-the art UC Baseball Stadium and ready to fight the new challenges of the BIG EAST, things are looking up in the Bearcat baseball program. “We are obviously exited to begin our first trip through the BIG EAST and face the new competition,” Cleary said. “I think we are very experienced in some areas, but very young in some areas too. We are hoping the experience can overcome the youth.” The experience Cleary speaks of starts with 15 returning letterwinners, including six starters in the field. The Bearcats will count on leadership from its senior

class of six, including three-year starters Jon DeLuca and Mark Muscenti. UC experienced a 10-game turnaround in the victory column last year, due in part to the addition of offensive standouts LaFringe Hayes and Logan Parker. The twosome also helped turn UC into one of the nation’s top defensive teams. With that duo along with four other returning starters, UC should be well-balanced offensively and very strong in the field. “I think we have a good balance of speed and power and are more athletic than we have ever been,” Cleary continued. “We have a chance to be very, very consistent defensively and my hope is we will be improved offensively from a year ago.” The wild card in the Bearcats’ winning equation

once again figures to be pitching, where the squad has four returning regulars on the hill and a strong cast of newcomers. “As typically is the case with most teams, our success will boil down to how well we pitch,” Cleary stated. “I think we are capable on the mound, but there are some young guys and some newcomers that we need to have success from.” Another point of excitement for the Bearcats revolves around the 2006 schedule that features 30 home contests and UC’s first BIG EAST slate. “We feel like we have a great schedule with a large number of home games,” Cleary said. “We also have an extra conference series at home which will hopefully be to our advantage.”

The battle for the third spot in the rotation will probably come down to a pair of lefties as junior college transfer Kyle Rapp and sophomore Adam Calez battle for the position. Both are versatile players who should also see time in the outfield. Junior Nick Buscemi is also likely to get a look as a starter. In the bullpen, the Bearcats will count on a mix of players starting with sophomore Sean Munninghoff. The righty split time between the rotation and bullpen last year, earning four wins in 19 total appearances. Among the other top arms expected to work in relief are senior Bryan Wood and sophomore Matt Heber, who were both mainstays out of the pen last year. Sophomore A.J. Upton has shown potential in limited action and could be in the mix. Florida State transfer Glen Simon and freshman Dan Osterbrock will also be in the hunt for innings for the Bearcats.

Sophomore Sean Munninghoff

Pitchers The 2005 season, the first under the tutelage of veteran pitching coach Joe Regruth, netted the Bearcats significant improvement as the squad trimmed nearly three runs off of its team earned run average. Despite the graduation of three key seniors, Cleary and Regruth are counting on more improvement from this year’s group of hurlers. This season’s pitching staff is talented but youthful, as many of the Bearcats’ top throwers have one year or less of Division I experience. The most experienced of the starting candidates in hardthrowing right-hander Kevin Schrader. Now a sophomore, Schrader made 10 starts last season among his 15 total appearances. Following Schrader as a starter will be another fireballer in true freshman Steve Blevins. A highly touted hitter and pitcher as a prep, Blevins will get his chance to shine early for UC.

Catchers/Designated Hitters The Bearcats will audition another new face behind the plate in 2006 as junior college transfer Nick Maragas is the top candidate to take over for the graduated Jim Olds. Maragas has a good arm and a powerful bat as witnessed by his two home runs in the Red/Black Fall World Series. Backing up Maragas will be senior Neall French. French started 19 games last season before a back injury sidelined him for the balance of the year. Sophomore Dustin Alvey is also on the UC roster as a catcher, but will redshirt this year while recovering from an injury after a productive freshman campaign.

The frontrunner for the designated hitter slot is senior Jack Nelson. After an outstanding sophomore season, Nelson struggled at times last year. If he is able to get back to the form of 2004, Nelson gives UC another dangerous bat in the line-up. Other players who could DH include French, junior Kyle Rapp and freshman Josh Harrison.

2006 Season Outlook

Infielders UC’s infield is clearly one of the team’s strengths as three of last year’s four starters are back from a defense that ranked fourth nationally in double plays per game. Manning first base for the second straight year will be senior Logan Parker, who burst onto the scene from the junior college ranks last season with a solid glove and a powerful bat. He is expected to anchor not only the infield, but also the middle of the lineup. At second base will be three-year starter Mark Muscenti. The senior has been the Bearcats’ most reliable defender during his career and has shown marked improvement with the bat over the past couple of seasons.

Season Outlook

The hot corner will once again be ably manned by senior Jon DeLuca. Entering his fourth season as a starter and his third year at third base, he is outstanding both offensively and defensively. At the plate, DeLuca ranked second on the squad in RBI last season, while committing only seven errors in 55 games in the field. UC does have a sizable hole to fill at shortstop after last season’s starter, Mark Haske, was selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. A pair of true freshman in Adam Yeager and Josh Harrison will battle for the starting nod this spring. Providing depth for the incumbents will be true freshman Cory Hodskins. Jack Nelson is a former starter at first base, where he will also be the primary backup.

Senior Mark Muscenti

Outfielders After entering last season with all three outfield spots up for grabs, the Bearcats enter 2006 with two of the three positions anchored by a returning starter with the potential to be a star. In center, UC will once again enjoy the many talents of LaFringe Hayes. The speedy senior showed a multitude of skills last year both offensively and defensively and he will be looked upon to patrol centerfield and bat leadoff. The Bearcats have left field in the capable hands of Brian Szarmach. After playing sparingly as a redshirt freshman, the powerful Szarmach launched 10 home runs last season, while also showing solid defensive ability. He, along with Logan Parker, will anchor the

middle of the Bearcat batting order in 2006. The right field position could go in a number of different directions, with junior Kyle Rapp and freshman Josh Harrison the lead candidates. Harrison had a great fall, making a case for himself in the regular line-up. Rapp is also capable of handling the spot when he is not contributing on the mound. Like Rapp, sophomores Adam Calez and Kevin Schrader can both play in the outfield, but will likely be regulars on the mound for UC. The Bearcats welcome a pair of newcomers to the fold in freshmen Keith Kampe and Roger Prettyman. Prettyman was one of the surprises of the fall session, making the team as a walk-on.

Bearcat Staff

10th yyear ear • FFair air field ‘90 airfield During his nine seasons at Cincinnati, Brian Cleary has established himself as one of the top coaches ever to lead the Bearcats on the diamond. After taking over a struggling program in 1997, Cleary has led the Bearcats to 207 wins in his career, ranking second on the school’s all-time win list behind the legendary Glenn Sample. By building with youth, the 37-year-old Cleary has established a strong core of young athletes. He has upgraded the talent level within the program thanks to an emphasis on aggressive recruiting. Cleary has now set his sights on taking the program to the NCAA Tournament after a 30-plus year absence. For the past three seasons, Cleary has rebuilt a team that should be poised to contend for BIG EAST championships upon the program’s move to the new conference this season. With the completion of the state-of-the-art UC Baseball Stadium and the signing of two straight top recruiting classes, Cleary’s team should be one to watch in the BIG EAST this season. After two straight subpar seasons, the 2005 Bearcats showed an improvement of 10 victories, finishing the campaign with a 25-30 mark. Later in 2005, UC’s recruiting class received honorable mention nationally from Collegiate Baseball magazine. Cleary made an immediate impact upon joining the Bearcat family. After inheriting a team that won only five games in 1996, Cleary pushed his teams to increased win totals each of his first four years. After winning 12 games in his first year, he increased that total to 15 in 1998, 30 in 1999 and 35 in 2000. The 1999 squad posted a breakthrough 30-29 season, shattering 17 individual and eight team records and finishing as the eighth most improved team in the nation (12-game improvement). The 30 wins marked just the third 30-win season in UC’s 115 years of baseball and the first winning campaign since 1995. In 2000, the Bearcats won a school record 35 games and advanced to the finals of the C-USA Tournament. The squad also set four individual and eight school records. In 2001, UC garnered 34 wins, the second-most in school history, and went 1611 in Conference USA to finish tied for third. That finish is the best ever by a Bearcat team in C-USA. Kevin Youkilis was a third-team all-American and one of three Bearcats taken in the 2001 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Tony Maynard was named a freshman All-American, and Hamblen was a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the top catcher in the nation. For his efforts, Baseball America named Cleary one of the top-10 coaches on the rise in Division I. As Cleary has upgraded the Bearcats’ talent, he has done the same to the schedule. Games with 2005 College World Series runner-up Florida highlights the 2006 non-conference schedule, along with contests against NCAA Tournament qualifiers Miami (Ohio), North Carolina A&T and regional rivals Kentucky, Ohio and Xavier.

Cleary came to UC after three seasons at Tulane, where he helped the Green Wave to a 116-70 mark and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Cleary’s efforts as an associate head coach, assistant coach and recruiting coordinator helped Tulane to the 1996 CMic ha icha haee l, B Brr ian, K Kaaelin, Vale alerr ie USA championship and and K lear learyy Kee v in C Clear a top-25 national ranking. In addition to his duties as recruiting coordinator, Cleary coached the hitters, infielders and baserunners and served as the team’s third-base coach. A 1990 graduate of Fairfield University, Cleary, a native of Boca Raton, Fla. earned four letters and was a two-time Metro Atlantic Conference All-Academic team pick.

The Brian Cleary Recruiting Philosophy Brian Cleary’s recruiting philosophy is simple. Start by keeping the best local talent at home. During Cleary’s tenure, he has brought a slew of local products to UC, including five who have gone on to play professionally. Former Bearcats and local products Curtus Moak (Cincinnati Reds/Oakland A’s), Chris Hamblen (Texas Rangers), Steve Pickerell (Tampa Bay Devils Rays), Matt Singer (New York Yankees) and Kevin Youkilis (Boston Red Sox) have all played minor league baseball in various organizations in recent years. From there, Cleary attracts top players from across the country, including Josh Kay (Oakland A’s) and Mark Haske (Detroit Tigers) who were both selected in the 2005 draft. Cleary’s first three recruiting classes were ranked among the best in the nation by Collegiate Baseball magazine, the only program in Ohio so honored.
