DESIGNING FOR ALL USERS BY DRUCILLA OWENBY, ESC-20 EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST, INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER & TECHNOLOGIST

When instructional designers and web developers hear the phrase, "designing for all users", they often think...508 Compliance. But what if you began to think outside of the box, in fact, throw the box away. Designing for every learner is more than meeting the needs of the blind or visually impaired and deaf or hard of hearing community. It is about designing for knowledge retention and increasing accessibility by making content accessible for all learners, no matter their device, distractions, capabilities, and environment. In addition to sharing some best practices, we will brainstorm some techniques, ideas and improvements for your current projects.

I DON’T HAVE SPEAKERS AT MY DESK “I’ll try to get what I can out of this lesson without audio.”

I DON’T USE A MOUSE “My hands cannot use a mouse, I guess I will skip all the interactivities that need me to hover my mouse over them. Surely I’ll learn enough without this information.”

WHERE IS THE PLAY BUTTON? “There is no text in this course, surely there is audio. Where is the play button?”

HOW DO I TURN OFF THE AUDIO? “I wish courses would not have audio auto-play. It makes it hard for me to concentrate when I hear my screenreader talking and the course audio playing at the same time.”
