• Proximity: 25 miles Southwest of Washington DC • 10 Square Miles • Population: Approximately 40,000 • Employees: ~350 • Independent City • Maintain our own Electric, Water, Sewer, Storm, Roads, etc.

Major reorganization 6-8 years ago. Moved from PW to IT. Migrated from AutoCAD to ESRI. Personnel restructure. Contractor hired to host GIS Website.

• 2 Full time GIS employees – GIS Manager – GIS DBA • ~12 Part time “Data Stewards” • ~30 ArcGIS Desktop Licenses in use • One internal server (virtualized) running ArcGIS Server 10.1 Acquired the Small Government ESRI Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) in December 2012.

• Contractor hosted website – slow to update. • Flash based site with no option to go to HTML5. • City Manager, Finance Manager, and City Council had gotten iPads and iPhones. • Needed to stay relevant!

• First AGOL site for Manassas. • One of the first AGOL sites in Northern Virginia. • Main public GIS website.

Main public GIS website. One solution fits all mentality. Many, many layers in layer control. Development time – approximately 6 weeks (started using 30 day trial) – much trial/error. • Went live in January 2013. • Hosting HTML on local server/Hosting data on ArcGIS Online. • • • •

LESSONS LEARNED
• Credit Use was a major concern. Still are not using Geocoding on AGOL but had 12K credits available after a year. • Standing up services is a learning process. • IT issues – firewall. • Needed to host HTML to gather statistics.
