Background The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 12th year, connects more than 90 of the world’s greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. We bring mayors from around the world together to learn from each other in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating resilient, sustainable and low carbon cities. C40 cities represent more than 650 million urban citizens and their economies account for 25% of global GDP. Our recent ‘Deadline 2020’ report sets out the critical role that the world’s major cities have to play in delivering the historic Paris Agreement to prevent catastrophic climate change. C40’s growing team of 100+ staff is headquartered in London, with offices in New York, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris, and individual staff based across 25+ different locations. C40 has an operating budget of c.$25m per year and is primarily funded through the generous support of philanthropic foundations. The strategic direction of the organization is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors, which is chaired by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight. A seven person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40.
Position Description The Director of Development is responsible for all fundraising initiatives and activities of the organization. He/she is directly responsible for the development and implementation of the annual giving plan including cultivating and maintaining relationships with new and existing donors and supporters, developing and building a Major Gifts Program and researching and writing grant proposals and providing evaluation reports as required. The Director of Development provides overall development policy and strategic advice to the Executive Director and Management Team on all aspects of fundraising. Responsibilities: • Responsibility for developing and executing C40’s annual fundraising plan. • Undertake regular reviews of the trends in the Annual Fundraising Plan, identifying opportunities and challenges and developing strategies to ensure C40’s fundraising goals are met. • Oversee identification of potential donors, developing the case for giving and developing and maintaining relationships culminating in successful giving. • Lead on the research and development of funding proposals for charitable foundations, corporate entities and individual donors. • Oversee the development and maintenance of ongoing relationships with major donors, including individuals, foundations and the corporate sector.

• Responsible for the supervision of the fundraising database and overseeing the tracking of proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising. • Remain current on all legislation and ethical practices pertaining to fundraising and ensuring C40’s fundraising meets the ethical requirements of its key stakeholders, including cities, board and strategic funders. • Responsible for undertaking all due diligence on potential donors. • Line management for 2 members of staff in the fundraising team. Person Specification: • A dedicated leader/manager, who is collaborative and a team-player with experience working among diverse groups of stakeholders through effective, articulate and persuasive communications. • Passion for tackling climate change and creating more sustainable cities. • Ability to articulate C40s propositions in clear, simple and accurate terms. • Exceptional problem solving, interpersonal and strategic thinking capabilities. • Ability to creatively design and implement proposals that fit C40’s current and long-term needs. • Background in environmental policy with an NGO, or working with city governments desirable. • Committed to the mission, purpose and values of C40 and its programs, with the desire to capitalize on and be part of the team that impacts the organization’s future. • Fluency in English essential; additional language skills desirable. Other Requirements: Applicants must already have the right to work in the United Kingdom if applying to work in London or the right to work in the United States if applying to work in New York. International travel will be required as part of the role. Although it is not likely to be extensive, the post-holder needs to be able to travel for short periods at limited notice.
