Figure S1. High resolution mass spectrometry (MS) data (black) of clusters with a nominal concentration xnom of 4%, 7% and 10%, respectively, compared to simulated isotope distributions (colored) illustrating the extraction of the ratios of the different cluster species ((CdSe)13 (blue), Cd12MnSe13 (red) and Cd11Mn2Se13 (green)).

Simulation of ratios of different species based on binomial distribution: Considering only undoped, monodoped and bidoped clusters we simulated the relative probabilities of these three cluster species in an ensemble with a nominal Mn2+ concentration xnom on the base of a binomial distribution. The simulation ensures that - at any given overall nominal concentration xnom between 0% and 15.4% of Mn2+- the probabilities and

,

of undoped, monodoped and bidoped cluster add up to unity, while

the total number of Mn2+ ions in the Cd12MnSe13 and Cd11Mn2Se13 cluster yield the nominal concentration
