Our Mission Statement: "To charge the Diocese of Arizona to minister to prisoners and their families (during and post incarceration), advocate for changes to the current prison system, and to mutually share God’s forgiving love.” Perryville Prison Worship Team
“Don’t forget us.” In the summer of 2014, Bishop Kirk Smith hosted a Prison Summit Meeting to discuss ministering to our brothers and sisters who are or have been incarcerated. It was an exciting event as Bishop Kirk and others shared their passion for this ministry. In the following months a group was formed to organize the first Diocesan Prison Ministry Program. Our mission statement is purposefully broad in scope because we anticipate that this
program will continue to grow and expand as more and more people within the Diocese become aware of the joys associated with prison ministry. In fact, many of those who are already participating in programs that involve our brothers and sisters behind bars have found that prison ministry is an example of "reverse ministry" - we receive blessings a hundredfold for every effort we put forth. There are many ways that you and your church can become involved in this rewarding mission field. Efforts can be simple, such as participating in existing programs like Prison Fellowship’s Angel Tree, donating Forward Day by Day devotionals to a local prison, or simply sending a birthday card to an inmate.
For those who wish to take their involvement behind the bars perhaps you will consider joining our own AZ Prison Worship Teams who lead services within the prison based on the Episcopal liturgy. Our goal is to have Prison Worship Teams on-site at every yard in every prison in Arizona. Beyond the gates, opportunities exist to volunteer as a mentor for inmates as they prepare for release and during those first few months of release. Mentoring is a key part of successful re-entry. More volunteer opportunities are listed on our website:
