The Rev. Lucy LaRocca Resolved, that the 231st Convention of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut direct all Parishes and Worshiping Communities within the Episcopal Church in Connecticut to develop and maintain disaster preparedness plans and to add their information to the Episcopal Asset Map (http://ecct.episcopalassetmap.org/) before the 232nd Convention of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut; and Be it futher resolved, that the Office of the Episcopate and Diocesan Disaster Coordinators shall monitor progress in implementing this policy; and Be it futher resolved, that the Diocesan Disaster Coordinators shall report on the state of disaster preparedness to the 232nd Convention of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut. Explanation We live in an area that is subject to natural disasters and after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012, we know that we are at risk for human-initiated disasters. We are called to exercise leadership in helping our communities to be resilient in the face of possible disaster. We know from long experience that disasters have a stronger effect upon the poor, the weak and the vulnerable. Filling in the Asset Map will help us to be aware of and able to deploy the tremendous resources of people and parishes in the face of disasters. Planning templates and resources are available on the ECCT website.
How does this resolution further God’s mission of restoration and reconciliation with all of creation? Being prepared in advance of a disaster and sharing our resources via the Asset Map will allow all of us to more fully collaborate with and assist each other in the face of any disaster, large or small and especially to serve the poor and vulnerable. Enacting this resolution will bring us closer together and enable us to heal more quickly when disaster strikes. Statement of Requirements to Implement the Resolution Materials to create plans are available for free download from the ECCT website: https://www.episcopalct.org/resources/Concerns/Disaster-Response/ Minimal time is required to fill out the plans, and assistance is available from the Disaster Response Team.
