Discipline Guidelines Discipline: The ability to do things that one really does not want to do! The discipline guidelines of North Madison Elementary School are designed to ensure that each student has the opportunity to learn in a safe and secure environment. Our aim is to develop responsibility, citizenship, and respect for others. Each of the schools in the MCSC is obligated by the rules and regulations of the Board of Trustees to prepare and share a discipline policy with students and parents. The school-wide discipline policy emphasizes positive behaviors and eliminates those behaviors that are unsafe and/or disruptive. To achieve these goals, the following school rules have been established: • show respect for others and display good sportsmanship • keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself • follow all safety and playground rules • accept personal responsibility for your own actions In general, our philosophy of discipline is based on the following assumptions: 1. Students, parents, and all of society share with the schools the responsibility of discipline. 2. School personnel have a responsibility to develop a discipline plan which incorporates positive reinforcement
as well as appropriate consequences to promote acceptable behavior. 3. School personnel shall strive to implement a program based on the recognition of the dignity and right of the individual, and upon self-control. 4. Parents will be expected to support the school staff in all student discipline matters and follow through with good parenting at home. 5. Parents will be expected to support the school staff in all student discipline matters so that students will learn to accept personal responsibility for their own actions. 6. Students will be expected to comply with school rules, follow the course of study, and acknowledge the authority of school personnel as prescribed by various state laws. 7. Students will be responsible for their own behavior. Therefore, we believe that appropriate behavior and good discipline are an integral part of our educational program at North Madison and an important aspect of training and guidance for life.
We have developed the following standards of behavior for North Madison Elementary School in order to provide: • a classroom environment conducive to learning • a playground atmosphere that allows for the enjoyment of physical activity • a pleasant environment during the lunch period Each teacher will have standards for classroom behavior and an appropriate reinforcement system. These standards will be communicated to parents at the beginning of the year at Back-toSchool Night.
School wide Behavior Standards
1. Follow classroom, playground, bus, and lunch standards. 2. Listen and follow directions the first time given. 3. Stay on task and allow others to do so. 4. Have needed materials ready and be ready for all learning environments (gym= shoes, art= materials, etc.). 5. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 6. Respect the feelings and property of others.
Consequences for Violating a School wide Standard An organized system of consequences will be implemented when a student's actions violate a School wide Behavior Standard. Consequences progress in severity from a verbal warning to a 30 minute detention to a conference involving the student, parent(s), teacher, and dean. Violation of a School wide Standard 1st Offense: Warning and discussion of rules in the classroom. 2nd Offense: Teacher consequence; note sent home or phone call to parent. 3rd Offense: Referral to Dean of Students. Severe Clause: Referral to school administrator/Dean of Students, possible suspension or expulsion. Some violations will require the immediate response of the Principal or Dean depending on the severity of the offense. Dean of Students Response Failure to follow these rules will result in issuance of a Behavior Notice requiring both parent and student signatures. Behavior Notices may affect citizenship grades on the child's report card. Behavior Notices one and two are considered serious warnings and are communicated to parents for awareness and written signature. Three Behavior Notices and beyond may result in various consequences, such as, time in the “reflection room”, a
student, parent(s), teacher, principal conference, suspension, and/or expulsion. Severe Clause The following infractions are of a serious nature and require immediate time in the “reflection room”: Bodily harm to another person/fighting. Damage to school and/or personal property.
