Location Doha, Qatar Client Public Works Authority State of Qatar SWA Scope Illustrative Public Domain Design Guidelines for three selected study areas in Doha, Qatar
Project requirements included creating a set of illustrative Public Domain Design Guidelines for several areas in Doha as a demonstration of SWA’s approach to creating design guidelines for the whole country of Qatar. Urban challenges and opportunities of this rapidly growing country were primarily to be addressed in conceptual proposals for streetscape design. A relaxed atmosphere that permeates the public spaces of Qatar is derived from the balancing of cultural imports and exports, unique among the fast growing cities and states of the Gulf region. SWA’s design proposal seeks to manifest the comfort of this uniquely Qatari spirit into all aspects of the public realm. For the purposes of this design proposal, SWA defined comfort as going far beyond physical comfort. By relating every design decision back to the unifying concept of “comfort in the Qatari vernacular landscape and culture”, all aspects of the public realm will serve as a catalyst for strengthening Qatari identity and improving life for residents of Qatar. The end result is a public realm that is simple, grounded and inspiring. SWA Group: www.swagroup.com
