Can junior students correctly identify the components of a college application, and are they aware of the planning tools available in Naviance? Will the Class of 2017 Post-Secondary Planning and Naviance Workshop implemented by the DHS Counseling team contribute to 100% of current 11th grade students successfully identifying a post-secondary plan prior to their graduation in June 2017? Our current program goal is for 100% of seniors in the Class of 2016 to commit to a post-secondary plan by June 14, 2016; however, we recognize that increasing student knowledge and promoting post-secondary planning requires intervention prior to senior year. The following procedure was used to deliver the Junior Post-Secondary Planning & Naviance Workshop: 1. Students were given a pre-survey and post-survey to gauge their knowledge prior to and after the presentation. 2. Counselors delivered a presentation on post-secondary options, important factors in college admission decisions, components of a college application, Naviance post-secondary planning tools, and steps to prepare for the future. 3. Students were given approximately 40 minutes “work time” to practice using the planning tools within Naviance.
See attached data charts.
Summary: Overall, the Junior Post-Secondary Planning and Naviance Workshop appears to have, at least for the short-term, significantly increased knowledge of the college application process and college-planning tools among 11th grade students. Data will need to be collected through the Class of 2017’s senior year to determine if student knowledge of these areas is correlated to successfully identifying their own individual post-secondary plan prior to graduation. Implications: The DHS Counseling department should consider which areas students were least confident in on their post-surveys and consider additional reinforcement or lessons on such content. Counselors will continue to present post-secondary information during junior and senior year so that students are knowledgeable about the steps they need to take to achieve their future goals.
Counselors will meet with each student to help them choose an appropriate course load based on their strengths and interests.
