3rd Commandment Exodus 20:7 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name (NIV). "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain (ESV). Misusing God’s Name   

Vain (shav) – emptiness, vanity, falsehood, nothingness. Vain means carelessly or without thought. It means to use a very important word as if it had no high and holy meaning. Do not use my name for emptiness – for no purpose, for no reason, as if My name has no significance. “To misuse God’s name means you speak about Him carelessly, thoughtlessly, or even flippantly, as if He didn’t matter or really didn’t exist at all. God’s name has deep, spiritual significance. So to treat it like something worthless is profanity in the truest sense of the word: ti is to treat something holy and sacred as common and secular. To dishonor God’s name in any way is to denigrate His holiness. It is a way of saying that God Himself is worthless.” – Philip Ryken

Lifting Up God’s Name  Name (shem) – reputation, fame, glory  God named Himself – there is no one higher than Him. Matthew 6:9 This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name…” 

To hallow – to consecrate, the set apart for sacred purpose. God wants us to preserve His name for the purpose of worship and praise.

Acts 19:11-20 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. 13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out." 11

Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?" 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. 17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. 18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds. 19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. 20 In this way the Word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.
