DOWNHOLE TOOL SPECIALIST

HOW DO I GET HERE?

#DownholeToolSpecialist You work with cutting-edge technology. Your goal? To ensure other crew members on the well services team understand what’s happening at the end of a drill string on a drilling rig. When it comes to electronics, you “get” it.

What does this career look like? This occupation can include a number of activities. You could be gathering core samples to be analyzed by geologists and engineers or isolating differing parts of a formation to extract hydrocarbons using packers, essentially plugs or dispensing clamps and drills to retrieve damaged components downhole. What do all these activities have in common? You operate and monitor cutting-edge tools during well drilling, evaluation, intervention, completion and production. The tools are attached to the bottom hole assembly (BHA) at the end of the drill string on a drilling rig and gather necessary information. The types of tools chosen are based on the oil and gas reservoir formation. Once the BHA is withdrawn from the well, you perform maintenance and/or repair the tools.

Licensing: A Class 3 or 5 driver’s licence (or equivalent) appropriate to the vehicle being driven and a clean driving record are required.

What would I do? Beyond selecting the necessary downhole tools, you read measurements and you monitor the BHA to ensure the work is completed successfully. You’re also maintaining and repairing the equipment. Specifically, you may be: 4 Rigging up and rigging down of all related wireline cased-hole or open-hole equipment Communicating effectively with customers Training or supervising less experienced personnel

Certification: Accreditation and professional membership through a recognized organization such as the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) or the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) is preferred by most oil and gas service companies.

A post-secondary diploma in a mechanical, electrical, electronics, instrumentation, petroleum engineering technology or related discipline is typically required. A post-secondary degree in an applied science discipline, such as engineering, mathematics and geology, is also an option.
