Save the Date! KELP ART + AWARENESS EVENT

presented by: greenport harbor brewing company + cornell cooperative extension's marine program

JANUARY 12, 2018 5 PM - 8 PM Greenport Harbor Brewing Company, Peconic Location

KELP BEER RELEASE KELP ART INSTALLATION KELP PRODUCT SHOWCASE KELP AQUACULTURE PRESENTATIONS

What will this event feature? This event will feature the release of a limited edition kelp beer from Greenport Harbor Brewing Company; unveiling of a unique kelp inspired art exhibit; highlight several products made utilizing kelp; and feature a presentation by CCE Marine Program experts on the feasibility of establishing a kelp aquaculture industry here on Long Island!

Why focus on kelp?  CCE is currently working on a project to test the feasibility of growing kelp in the Peconic Estuary. This work could lead to an entirely new industry that produces a sustainable commodity, while cleaning our local waters. Kelp and kelp derived products can be used in a variety of different industries, such as culinary, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and agricultural.

I'm an artist, how can I get involved? We invite you to make kelp your muse and participate in a unique art installation that will be on view at Greenport Harbor Brewing Company's Peconic Location starting January 12, 2018. All artists will be provided 3 grain sacks, recycled from GHBC’s brewing operation, with the challenge of transforming them into blades of kelp that will be hung from the rafters of the tasting room. To participate, visit the Peconic Tasting Room and pick up your registration packet. Completed artwork must be submitted by January 7th.

This event is being carried out as part of CCE’s Peconic Estuary Kelp Aquaculture Feasibility Study funded by Suffolk County Water Quality Protection and Restoration Program and Land Stewardship Initiative. For more info on this event, please contact Kim Barbour at [email protected].
