What does this career look like? Is there a pipeline under development? A new gas facility being built? An existing building being retrofitted? You take the engineering or architectural information, designs, and data for the project and develop detailed visuals. These documents contain the technical information, show the relationships between parts, machinery and systems, and provide an overview of what the final project will actually look like. You meet with engineers, architects, planners and designers to discuss the design concepts, building materials and plans. You interpret the information using computer design programs, as well as manual drafting techniques, to prepare 2D or 3D drawings. The drawings become detailed engineering plans, architectural plans, flow diagrams, schematics, maps, detailed working drawings or 3D displays.

What would I do? You have to precisely interpret the engineering plans in your work. Measurements, locations and systems must be exact. This means a lot of communication with coworkers, problem solving, data analysis, math and computer work. Different professionals will often be responsible for developing individual pieces of a project. This means you’ll collect each piece of the puzzle and bring it all into one drafting document. You constantly communicate, organize and apply broad understanding of how all the parts and systems work together to create a final project. You also identify and solve problems with the drafts when they come up. After completing the drawings, you will communicate your design ideas and solutions clearly and concisely back to the engineers, architects, planners and designers. You may also be involved with preparing the cost estimates based on the completed plans.
HOW DO I GET HERE? A post-secondary diploma in engineering design and drafting technology is typically required. Programs related to AutoCAD operation, engineering design and drafting or GIS and CADD integration are preferred. • Certification in engineering design and drafting technology or in a related field through provincial associations of engineering/ applied science technologists may be required by employers. Alberta regulates Drafting Technologists and Technicians.
HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING Specific health and safety certifications will be determined by job requirements.
HOW CAN I WORK IN LNG? As Canada prepares for the launch of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, this occupation will play a key role in: • Off-site fabrication • LNG export facility construction • LNG export facility operations • Natural gas pipeline construction When LNG takes off, you can be a part of the action!
